T42 Screen Issue
T42 Screen Issue
The screen on my T42 is shot. I am debating between getting a new screen or getting a new laptop.
What would everyones recommendation here be?
Also, if I got the new screen, how easy will it be to install?
If I get a new laptop, are the ideapads a bad route to go after having a T42?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum!
What's the 7-character model number of your T42, 237?-???
What's wrong with the screen?
IdeaPads are generally quite different from their ThinkPad cousins, it all depends on your specific needs and user patterns.
Please let us know a bit more.

Re: T42 Screen Issue
There are 14.1" XGA and SXGA+ screens.
There are 15" XGA, SXGA+ and UXGA screens.
The XGA screens are cheapest, then SXGA+ and most expensive UXGA. Price-range overall: ca. $40 - $150.
Still a lot cheaper than buying a new laptop!
To replace the LCD itself, you need to remove the screw-covers on the LCD bezel and the short sides of the lid.
Then the screws and bezel itself, followed by the screws on the sides of the lid and LCD.
Exact how-to: see the HMM http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464
Depending on how dab you are with a small Phillips screwdriver #0, it'll take between 1/4 - 1 hour.

Re: T42 Screen Issue
Ok sorry for the lack of information.
The laptop is a 2378RRU.
The hinge on the left side when looking at the screen broke. At this point the LCD worked fine, just the swivel action of the hinge was lost. I tried to fix it myself, and in doing so I lost use of the LCD. It now just turns a whitish brown color upon start up.
What are the huge differences between the ideapads and thinkpads?

Re: T42 Screen Issue
Anyone?
If I cannot repair this, does anyone know any reasons why I should not purchase a Lenovo Ideapad U450p?

Re: T42 Screen Issue
No one said that you shouldn't purchase an IdeaPad, just that they're a whole different ballgame from ThinkPads...
IdeaPads are consumer-class laptops, no trackpoint, glossy screens, weaker graphics. If any of this appeals to you, go right ahead and buy one. Build quality is not bad.
