T42p using T43 motherboard? R51 intel board to drive SXGA?

#1 Post by nic_be » Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:02 pm

Hi from Belgium,

this thread to ask if I can put a T43 ATI X300 based mainboard in a T42p laptop? Will it fit? Will it drive the UXGA screen at full 1600x1200 resolution?
If not, is a T42 board the only option?

Will a 15" R51 Intel Extreme graphics output something on a 14" SXGA+ 1400x1050 screen?
I could override the predefined resolutions to get more than 1024x768 under linux after.

Many thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Nicolas

Welcome to the forum!

Intel board will NOT drive a 14" SXGA+ LCD. It WILL drive a 15" SXGA+.

ATi X300 will drive an UXGA LCD with no issues. You will need to make some adjustments to it to work in a T42p frame, and use different RAM.

Hope this helps.

I'm curious. What is the culprit that makes it so?

I'm interested in knowing it too.

So my best choice is to find a 15" SXGA+ FlexView T43, in which I'll put the R51 mobo. And use the T43 ATI inside the T42p...

Thanks for your time!

I don't think that anyone has a 100% foolproof answer, but my guess would be that IBM somehow disabled that resolution from being recognised when triggered by cable used on 14" SXGA+ units...

I'm typing this on a T43 with an Intel board and 15" IPS LCD. It works.

Some R51 had the Intel/IPS combo. Certain R52s had Intel boards and non-IPS 15" SXGA+ screens...

None of the machines had 14" SXGA+ driven by an Intel board...and no one has made it work AFAIK...

And to confuse the issue even more, I do have an R52 with Intel gfx AND with a Flexview IPS SXGA+ LCD.
George has seen it.

Well, yes, but we also concluded that it hasn't left the factory that way... :D

Now I'm totally confused here...

Why would you put an T43 ATi board in a T42p shell while installing a R51 board in a T43 shell?

Leave T43 as it is, they are far less prone to GPU failures than the older T4x machines, and just get another T43 board to drive that UXGA from T42p...

My $0.02 only...

I own a working R51 Intel board.
A friend's T42p with a dead motherboard has to be brought back to live.

You're right about the T43 base.

I'll finally buy a 15" SXGA+ T43. I'll put the T42p's UXGA screen on the untouched T43 base for my friend to keep his screen and graphics performance,
and keep the T42p base equipped with the R51 board and the T43 screen (I don't need graphics power, and the SXGA+ on 15" is my preferred dpi size).
