A little bit of good news for the 14.1 SXGA+ T42/T42P
Apparently Samsung improved their 14" SXGA+ display. Since IDTech doesn't list anymore 14.1 SXGA+ displays on their website, it seems as though they're sourcing their displays from Samsung.
First: older specs

Second: newer specs (notice how there are some displays that aren't on the website)

Differences: old vs new
Response time: 30 vs 25
Contrast ratio: 250:1 vs 300:1

ID-Tech stopped shipping their 14.1" screens as of March 31...probably this means that new T41s and T42s are Samsung, but there is no way to tell for sure without opening up the LCD housing, which I would not recommend.
I doubt the specs on the Samsung LTN141P4 has never changed. The difference you see between the website and the .pdf brochure is just inaccuracy. There is no standard way to measure brightness (and hence contrast ratio) or response time, so depending on which way they choose to make up the numbers, they quote slightly different specs. Clearly, they try to push the specs to the high end for their sales brochures. The specs also change depending on exactly which screen one puts in front of the panel. Screens that reduce glare also reduce brightness.

If it is just typo, than I'm inclined to say the brighter one is correct. Although I have no way of verifying that my LCD is a Samsung and not ID tech, I find my LCD very bright, sometimes too bright for my eyes.Mofongo wrote:ID-Tech stopped shipping their 14.1" screens as of March 31...probably this means that new T41s and T42s are Samsung, but there is no way to tell for sure without opening up the LCD housing, which I would not recommend.

Since some other T41p owners have reported here that their LCD is too dim, I suspect those are the ID Tech or older spec Samsungs in the past. But you may be right in that different Co. measure things differently. However, you would expect that the products from the same company should be comparable right?
I would bet that the difference is that yours is a Samsung and the others are ID-Tech. IBM just stopped using the ID-Tech screens a few months ago. Samsung makes some realy nice LCDs, so I would not be surprised if they are noticably better than the older ID-tech ones...especially since they are marketing that model under their "Wise-view" campaign.
I have only ever seen a T40 in person (before my T42) and those have all looked somewhat low contrast and washed out, but they are definitely the older ID-Tech models.

No...if you look at the HMM, there are both ID-Tech and Samsung LCDs for SXGA+. IBM started using Samsungs when the ID-Tech screens went out of production on March 31 (or possibly a little before then). How long it takes from LCD production line to T4x assembly line, who knows. For the T42, I would guess you are pretty much guarenteed a Samsung for the 14.1" SXGA+. For the T41s, I do not know how IBM decided which got ID-Tech and which got Samsung. It could have just been assembly date, or they could have used the Samsungs preferentially on the higher end models.

What cable do I need to convert my T42 XGA to the LTN141P4 SXGA+ screen?

91P6787 is the cable you are looking for. Best case scenario is to do what I did when I converted my T41: I bought a complete T42p screen assembly which worked out great, especially since it already had the Bluetooth antenna so it allowed me to add BT very easily.Spirit-1776 wrote:What cable do I need to convert my T42 XGA to the LTN141P4 SXGA+ screen?
