T42 14.1" fan noise vs. competition
T42 14.1" fan noise vs. competition
I am currently deciding between the Thinkpad T42 (14.1" screen) and a Fujitsu S6000 series. I think I have answered most of my questions about the strengths of each unit, however I can't figure out if there is a significant difference in fan noise between them.
Can anyone help me with this? I have read that the Fujitsu runs nearly silent, even when the fan does turn on. Is the fan on the T42 similarly near silent? Thanks for your help.

My new T42 2378 FVU is silent. Absolutely. Even playing video games and temps rise to around 60C, it is quiet...silent.
However, every now and then ... maybe every third day or so, I notice the fan spinning up to a high speed level for a second. I cannot duplicate this... no matter what I do. It just happens...???
I believe other people have noted this "phenomenon", calling it an IBM quirk.

The quietest notebook I have ever used.
There is virtually no fan noise for 95% of the time. I use adaptive mode so my CPU temperature stays around 41 C 95% of the time. Only when I am running at very intense programs then the fan will work at full blast, but still relatively quiet considering it is running at full blast.
The HD is extremely quiet. I can only hear it when I put my ear on right palm rest.

My 2378-FVU is very quiet. The only time the fan spins up is when I turn on the computer (during POST) and when I really stress my computer with games. Even then it's very quiet.
Just a sidenote, isn't the Fujitsu S6000 series running on integrated graphics? The T42 is running on a powerful Mobility Radeon 9600 with 64MB dedicated VRAM. They should cost around the same price. Why not join us and own a Thinkpad? You won't regret it.
