2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
Has anyone tried using one of these? I think it might work in a 15in screen model T42 R50 or R51 even a T43. This would allow for cheaper hard drives although compatibility might be an issue (2010 error) for the T43. The larger case of the 15in screen models might allow for this adapter to fit on the end of the drive and then modify the drive cover. I might pick one up and give it a shot.

Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
Better take measurements. That adapter sticks out quite a bit and I can almost guarantee you'll still get 2010 boot errors with it.
Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
yes you might get 2010 errors on an R52 or T43. The other units would not have that problem.
Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
I have not used that adapter, but I have used others. (not internally) They have a lot of overhead, so they really slow things down. Mine wouldn't resume from standby and there were other problems.
Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
Having done some rebuilds of these machines, I can tell you at a glance that that adaptor is too large to fit.
It my opinion someone needs to build their own BIOS that shuts out the error2010 crap, taht we may all slap a 400 gig IDE drive in there.
Be faster than using a IDE->SATA adaptor, given that it's already using SATA->IDE...

Just passing through.

Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
You can get a SATA caddy for the T4x series of machines so why would you goof around with this funky piece of hardware ?? Just buy the SATA disk caddy and install a SATA drive:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0505713284
However, I think the only advantage of the SATA caddy is flexibility. It costs roughly $10 to $20 extra - which is the money you save on a SATA drive (vs. PATA drive, which is what I'm using). The only reason to use a SATA caddy or adapter is if you're looking for a state-of-the-art disk drive (PATA drives are typically one generation behind SATA these days.)

Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.

Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
I already have a PATA caddy and a SATA caddy for the Ultrabay, I look at it as having another tool in my arsenal. SATA drives are a lot cheaper too. I guess that makes me a geek 'cause I like to experiment on my laptops, and I have had dozens of Thinkpads. When you boot from the ultrabay without a primary disk it causes a long delay in the BIOS startup sequence. I find that annoying, and you lose access to the CDROM. With shipping it was like 26 bucks so it should be fun to play with. I also had a SONY VAIO I was going to try it in since it has a larger drive bay.

Our T42's have an internal SATA to IDE converter? Would it be possible then to remove that and run SATA?bluefoxx wrote:Having done some rebuilds of these machines, I can tell you at a glance that that adaptor is too large to fit.

No, T43's have a SATA to IDE converter. T42's do not... IDE only.
Re: 2.5 PATA to 2.5 SATA adapter
I should have it tomorrow and am going to test in in an R51 15in I might even plug it into my T43 for giggles. Of course it will stick out but I'm doing this for fun.
