Slow screen drawing on T42P

I think I've installed something or fiddled with a driver/configuration that has caused a significant slowdown in how my screen handles windowing actions. I do believe that this is a phenomenon that started occurring well after I reformatted and reloaded my OS and software. I don't think it is a basic limitation of the hardware.

2373HVU with Intel i855PM chipset
2GB memory, 100 (7200) + 320GB (5400) HDD
UXGA (1600x1200)
128 ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 driver: ati2mtag.sys 6.14.10.47

There are noticeable screen effects such as significant smearing when I drag a small window across the screen. Just minimizing and maximizing a window has a 100-200ms delay.

I've run lots of virus/spyware scanners and don't believe that it is due to malware. Anyone else seeing this effect?

Sorry for not including the obvious: Windows XP SP3.

Check you have the correct video driver installed. This can happen when the default VGA drive gets installed for any reason (or the wrong driver).
