range of t41 wirelsss

I have 2 T41's both with internal wireless cards.
placed side by side, one will find 8 to 10 wireless networks, the other only 1-3.
I have checked the connectors.

before I take them apart further and fiddle I was wondering what I should be looking for

crimped anntenna?
what is a good quality card? (will it make a difference)
tweaked settings
etc
