Need battery adice for my old T42p

#1 Post by gtodell » Wed Dec 02, 2009 12:16 pm

My trusty old T42P needs a new battery and I am hoping someone can provide me with some idea of what I should get and where I should get it.

The model/part numbers on the current battery are:

FRU 08K8198 and ASM 92P1065

I am down to about 30 minutes run time.

I am not sure I ever got more than 2.5 hours with this battery even when the TP was new. In any case, it would be great to find a battery that gave me as much run time as possible. Perhaps battery technology has evolved since I bought the unit in 2005!

Thank you very much in advance for any help with this matter.

GT

Your best bet by far is the new Boston Sonata Green battery.

I had success in the past with batteryrefill.com for my 600x battery. Haven't tried them
for a t4x battery, though. I looked at the sonata batteries on laptopcharge.com, and I
don't know if you use a docking station or not, but it looks like their batteries might not fit
if you use the dock. Good luck!

Avoid batteryrefill.com. There are plenty of posts here about their horrible service. I sent a friend to them and it took 4 months to receive a bad battery. He gave up and lost his money.

I recently bought an aftermarket battery on Ebay that seems good. Only had it for a month though.

The boston power batteries do look really good if you are buying for the long haul.

Ugh. That's terrible. It's been quite a while since I used them, I wasn't aware of recent problems.

Has anyone who bought one tried to use it with a port replicator or docking station? From the pictures on the site it looks like it won't fit.

On the port replicator for my T43 there is a little flap on the side closest to the back of the laptop that can be folded down. This gives room for a battery that goes beyond the back plane of the laptop. I am not sure though if all replicators or docking stations are like this.

EDIT: Ok, I didn't read all before answering. According to the site the battery also protrudes the bottom of the laptop. That is a different issue. From what I can see, the replicator gives a very limited space for anything below the bottom of the laptop. I wouldn't bet any money on being able to use a replicator with this battery installed.

I would imagine that those Boston Sonata batteries have the exact same outside measurements as the OEM batteries.
If not, problems would have been noted somewhere on the internet, and there currently are NONE!

Your battery is based on a simple 24c01 memory. If You have any experience with any electronics You can open the battery, on the top side of the little board there is a small memory unit, You need to connect it to a simple data interface(which needs 10 resistors, one IC and one capacitor = $3?) and delete the cycle count and change the capacity back to the factory settings. After that You will get two hours of use again. Circuits and software are easily available.
