I have an oldish T42, which I want to replace next spring - but I can't afford new notebook just yet. I also need to install Ubuntu for a project, but I don't want to switch for good (I'm using XP), and don't want to mess up my current HDD.
So far my plan for the next notebook is to buy one with the cheapest HDD available, and install SSD drive bought separately. What I've read on Anandtech convinced me to look at Intel X25-M or OCZ Vertex drives.
Since I have Ultrabay SATA adapter, but no drive, I thought about buying any SATA drive to boot Ubuntu from and work on. But that would set me back $50 or more (with shipping), and seems like a waste - in a few months I'll most probably have an unused SATA drive from the new notebook.
So my question is: has anyone used either OCZ or Intel SSD in their T42? I'm not looking for performance, only am wondering if it would work at all. I'm hoping it would work with Ubuntu, too
Unless there's some place to pick up dirt cheap mechanical SATA drive? I don't want to buy used or refurbished, since I need it for work.
Hope this makes some sense
Thanks!
