T42 network card problems

#1 Post by mr.blitz » Wed Dec 09, 2009 5:53 am

Hi...My T42 is the best laptop I have ever owned...fact.

Only got one small problem...

Every now and again the T42 crashes, either hangs firefox or windows itself, and on restart (hard restart is the only way to turn off) I am greeted by a screen that tells me that my internal network card is not initialized...when windows starts it finds new hardware and re-installs the network card.

So...i decided to disable the internal network card from the bios, and i bought a Xircom Realport (10/100+56k) dual height cardbus adapter. But i can't seem to fit it into the T42's PCMCIA slot.

Is the orientation of the slots in the T42 such that i cannot fir this card at all? Or is it some problem with the slots in my T42?

Luckily the Xircom Realport only cost me 25p+£2.25 postage...£2.50 total, so it's not the end of the world...but I liked the idea of having a network card that didn't require any extra plugs or adapters to connect. If i can get the Xircom to fit it will be hidden inside me T42 all good and a-ok.

Is there another dual height cardbus adapter that will fit in a T42?

Does anyone else have a similar problem with the internal network adapter? Or just me?

Does anyone else have problems when trying to fit a dual height 32-bit Cardbus adapter?

Any help welcome.

IBM states:
PC Card

* Conforms to the PC Card Standard 95
* The Type III slot can accommodate two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card
* Both 16-bit and 32-bit cards are supported.
* PCMCIA 2.1 standard
* No zoom video support

Type I = 3.3mm thick
Type II = 5/5.5mm thick
Type III = 10.5mm thick

The Xircom measurements say it's 10.5mm (0.413in.) thick, so it should fit in the bottom slot!
Check if you have any junk in your slot. Take the keyboard off as well, so you have full access to the PCMCIA bay.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
