Is my friend full of baloney?

#1 Post by wild_bill » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:58 pm

my friend who lives far away, swears that his 15" T42p has its original screen and that it has a native resolution of 2048x1536 - is this even possible?

if there was such a screen offered on T42p back in the day, was it a good screen? reliable? - is it an IPS? - is it as good of quality as the UXGA and who was the OEM?

I personally think he is probably BS-ing me again! :roll:

No, the only native resolutions offered on the T42Ps were SXGA+ (14" LCD @ 1400x1050) and UXGA+ (15" LCD @ 1600x1200).

If you look at the Properties you will see much finer resolutions listed for the T-4x with UXGA+, but these do not display full screen; they are panned.

I tried them and found the panning was poor at best and went back to 1280x1024, which seems to be a "sweet spot" for the UXGA.

ummmm, it seems the "sweet spot" for 1600x1200 UXGA would be 1600x1200 UXGA!! - any resolution besides the native resolution is simulated, and therefore pretty fuzzy & lame at least to most folk's eyes (including mine)!

There was a T50P offered with a 15" 2048x1536 IPS panel, so it may be that you friend has a T50P instead of a T42P. I don't know if it is possible, but it might be, to transplant the T50P panel into a T42P. If so, your friend could be telling the truth.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

It is perfectly possible to mod a 15" T42p to accept a QXGA panel meant for R50/p.

And yes, it is an IPS LCD made by ID Tech.

Unless your friend had a very strong connection within IBM at the time, the machine hasn't left the factory that way.
