#1 Post by lppy » Fri Feb 18, 2005 12:42 pm

Nice deal on 2373L1U ( i think any way)

IBM ThinkPad T42 2373
- Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz
- RAM 512 MB
- HD 40 GB
- CD-RW / DVD
- Mdm
- LAN EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN, Bluetooth, 802.11b, 802.11g
- Win XP Pro
- 15" TFT XGA (1024x768)

Wondering what others think of this configured system.

Thanks,

Is there any particular reason that you want 15" XGA rarher than a SXGA+?

consider 2378-fvu. same CPU, HD, less RAM but that can be upgraded easily.

The biggest adv, IMHO, is the SXGA+ at 14.1" that saves weight, increase battery life, and larger workable screen area. Also Radeon 9600.

FVU:

PM 735, 256MB, 40GB 5400rpm, 14.1 SXGA+, 64MB ATI Radeon 9600, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b/g, Modem, Giganet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 Cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

To be honest if you are going to go with a 15" but XGA, you would be better off to go with the FVU and get extra useable desktop space, but then again that's the opinion of a guy who loves UXGA screens.

The 2373-L1U & 2378-FVU are about the same price.
(about $1500).

L1U has 3 year warranty.

L1U has a bunch of things and is bigger.

The biggest difference is the discount:

For the FVU, about $165.

Your price
$1,484.10*
IBM Web Price
$1,649.00*

For the L1U, $729:
Your price
$1,499.00*
IBM Web Price
$2,219.00*

Which is pretty is pretty weird.

The video card is less (ATI Radeon 7500), only an XGA screen and a 15" one at that.

Also, the 2378FVU is an Express model which is already heavily discounted, that is why the discount percentage off the web price is less.

Shopping based on the discount amount can be very deceiving and misleading to your best judgement. You'll most likely be very happy to get the adviced model from the experienced users of T42 series on this forum.

I'd also recommend the 2378FVU. And add the 3 year warranty and more RAM.

If you like bigger screen size, that's fine. But make sure you get Radeon 9600 as your video chip, instead of 7500 or 9000.

IIRC, the XGA on the 15" is NOT Flexview. There's not much difference between the 14 and 15" in terms of viewability at same resolution, so I would also recommend the FVU.

T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

that might be but with a 3year warrenty & more ram (from anywhere) it is (very unfortunatly) out of my price range.it was what I really wanted-hoping that this will not be a very pale substitute
