Windows detects only 64mb on my ati x300 :-(

Hello guys!

I've just installed Windows 7 on my thinkpad t43 (2668) but I'm experiencing a weird problem with my ati mobility radeon x300. It has 128Mb (it always showed 128mb in windows XP) but windows 7 detects only 64Mb. I was playing Tales of monkey island on windows xp just fine but I noticed the game being a bit slower now so I guess is because of the video card problem I am experiencing.

I tried different drivers
- The official one for windows vista
- The one that windows 7 update installs
- The one i found on the WIndows7 RTM beta drivers page on the lenovo website

no luck so far though

I googled the problem and some other guy was experiencing a similar problem with his nvdia card and someone was suggesting setting the video memory size in the Bios but I found no such parameter on my T43.

Any suggestions?

Your X300 has and has always had only 64MB of hardware RAM.

ATI drivers enable additional memory sharing with system RAM, so that software can see 128MB. This is why XP showed 128MB total RAM. Such behavior has been observed on other video adapters as well.

I guess Win7 is just more accurate in showing the actual hardware parameters, and not what's visible to the software.

Oh, ok, thanks. Do you think the slower performance with the game is due to having installed Windows 7 then?

Most likely.
Try and install/run it in XP-compatibility mode.
