Network security on a T42

#1 Post by JimL » Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:37 am

It appears that the only wireless security on my T42 is WEP. Is that a hardware limitation?

What wireless adapter? If it's Intel 2200BG or the Thinkpad/Atheros a/b/g card, then no - they should support WPA/WPA2 perfectly, but you may need to update your drive and install the XP WPA2 patch (that is, assuming you are running XP).

The card probably limits your choice (old 802.11B ?), but some cards get improved security with the latest drivers.
Get a BG or even BGN card, if you haven't got one already.

If the OS is XP then pretty sure it needs to be SP3, assuming the network card is indeed capable.

A T41 with an IBM Atheros a/b/g card will support WPA/PSK with XP at SP1 (and then SP2, and then SP3). Mine is retired but it continues to work. Newer Intel cards work as well. So your T42 surely will with the right card.
