Fails to run on batteries, maybe battery hardware problem.

#1 Post by masterjet » Wed Dec 23, 2009 10:26 am

Hi all!
I recently tried to OC my t41 but without any effort - the memory refused to work stable :? .
Also i disassembled my battery to get some new cells. During the process i have short circuit :!: one cell for a sec.
I assembled the battery again, turned on the pc. It showed 97% charge and charged it to 100% :) , but when i removed the AC plug, the ThinkPad instantly turned off  . The battery meter shows 100% of charge and 9.65 Wh (the battery is old) and when charging it shows about 1-1.5A.
I even tried to discharge the battery with 2 coolers that consume 0.5А, the coolers worked fine for about 5 or 6 hours without any voltage lost on the cell-packs(have about 14V on it). When put the battery again it showed 0% and beagn to charge with 1.5А for about 2 hours. When the battery was charged i pulled out the AC plug and the ThinkPad instantly turned off again.

Now the battery icon is not green its brown blinking, but the power meter shows 100% charge.
The pcb of the battery looks fine but maybe its fault. Other battery characteristics show fine with 12.3V and 9.65Wh

Also it doesn't start with battery. The cell-pack has 14v of charge but on the battery contacts is no curency.

Maybe someone has the battery schematics or some tip to make it fine??

P.S. sorry for my bad english

Looking at this T4x Fuses document, use a test meter to check fuses F9 and F12 aren't blown (open circuit).

Here's a circuit diagram which shows how the battery charges and works.

Please note that it's very dangerous to short circuit the battery cells even for a second because they will very easily burst into flames.

If you have short circuited a cell, it may have damaged the small circuit board inside the battery. The only way to work out the problem is to try a new battery.

poshgeordie thanks, I think it will help.

I have read a few forums about repairing notebook batteries, they wrote that a flashing indicator means a overcharged battery, and it really has 15 volts on it.
Also it can be a EEPROM lock on the battery electronics.

Tomorrow i will have a t43 battery and I will try to diagnose those 2 batteries

P.S. If anyone has any other T-series schemes please mail me.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=79048 has information on the EEPROM and some guides to reprogramming it etc.

May I suggest that when you get the T43 battery that you do not take it apart before trying it in the laptop. You can then work out if the problem is hardware or battery.

I believe the circuit drawing above is very similar to the actual schematic from IBM.
