Hi I'm new but have a question about the T43

#1 Post by americo24 » Mon Dec 28, 2009 5:15 pm

First of all I would like to say hi to everyone and thanks to all of the contributors. Secondly I would like to say I come for the old ibm i122 -1161 (500mhz processor 163mb of ram and 2mb video card) (I use my desktop for my main work, I got this laptop when I was just learning windows about 5 years ago (i'm 15). Now I decided I want to learn more of Linux (I'm a Linux mint fan) and I decided to pick this up for 150 ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT ) (I already bought a new keyboard since its missing a few keyboards) I think its a good buy for something just to learn Linux. Anyways I want to know a few more thing what I couldn't find searching this wonderful site.

1. The max amount of memory is 2gb (recognized by windows) so what is best memory to get for it (pc4200 or 5300 or does it not make a difference>)

2.lets say I have a 512 stick and a 2gb stick, the computer recognizes 2.5 but windows only uses 2 gigs, is this the same for other Os's such a Linux?

3. Are the two memory slots next to each other or is one behind a keyboard or what not?

4.Has anyone ever used the ultra slim battery before? if so how much life will it add to my laptop? os it really worth it because I don't want a 9cell

5. Any common problems with this laptop model?

6. Not that it matters but how is the screen quality compared to a vga external monitor or modern day laptops?

Thank you so much for your time : )

What is the machine type and model as shown on the sticker on the bottom of the machine? It will be a (7) digit alpha numeric like 2373-3AU.

Hello americo24 ... and welcome to the forum.

I think I added 5300 memory. Crucial.com will tell you what is best.

Yes, 2 GB is the maximum allowed. I cannot confirm whether Linux has the same limitation as Windows.

There are two memory slots. Two are in the base of the T43, the other is below the keyboard. My T43 has the original 256MB memory plus 512MB in the two spaces below deck. I then have 1GB in the space below the keyboard.

I have never used the ultra slim battery.

Hopefully this will be of help. :)

thanks alot for the website, hit helped out a lot. Now I need to wait to find out whata my model can be The only facts I know is it has an 80gb hard drive 2.0ghz processor and 512mb ram and I am pretty sure that won't help finding my model.

How many different models of T43?...I'd guess dozens. The main reason I asked is to answer your Q about any common problems with this laptop model ...

I always thought you could modify the boot.ini so windows can use above 2gb I think it was the /PAE switch or /3gb switch this is true in the server realm.

Not when you have a 2GB chipset limitation that applies to all T4x/R5x units.
