Fn Keys not working on IBM T40 (XP)
Fn Keys not working on IBM T40 (XP)
Hi
The Fn keys (the blue keys)in my IBM t40 (running xp) are acting strange. Some of them do not respond at all (e.g brightness keys) some respond only after repeated strokes (FnF7) and some do other things like scroll up/down on F4. How can I return to normal??? Thanks

hello!!!
the fn doesn´t work or some keys work?
if some keys are working, it could be beause you dont have all soft of ibm installed, like the battery controller, presentation diretor, or you dont have the hot keys driver installed
you should check the lenovo page to download the correct drivers for the T40
best reagards and happy new year!!

Welcome to the forum.
Can you connect a different keyboard and check? Many different FRU keyboards will plug in and work so you don't need the exact T4x KB to check.

Re: Fn Keys not working on IBM T40 (XP)
It's not uncommon for individual keyboard keys to stop working. My work T4x full stop/ decimal point key has just decided it's had enough and I need a whole new keyboard just because of that.
One thing you could check is that there's no fluff or 'human dirt' - some keyboards are so filthy through everyday use that the keys become sticky in use.
Get an old toothbrush and GENTLY brush out the old pieces of hair/skin/pizza bits/etc out from the keytop and try the key again. It has to be said that the Fn key is not exactly the most overused key but is situated in a corner so there's a possibility that muck has built up there.
Also +1 for Sjthinkpader (and welcome to the forums and have a really great new year too!).

Re: Fn Keys not working on IBM T40 (XP)
THank you all for your comments
I think my problem is a software problem not HW. The Keys do work - they dont reproduce the desired effect.
The problem is that the combination of Fn with the various F keys (e.g. FnF7 for projector setting or FnF4 for standby done work properly)
I connected another keyboard form a desktop but it does not have the Fn button so...
Is short - I am looking for a way to do a "back to default" operation on the keys assignment.
Thanks again
Danidin

Follow Net_Kid10's advice, you are missing drivers.
