T41p: Create Recovery CDs from Service Partition

#1 Post by sookie » Sun Feb 20, 2005 1:47 pm

Hi,

I'd like to reclaim the space taken up by the Service Partition as I'm running low on disk space on my T41p. Before doing that, I want to create the recovery CDs.

After installing IBM Rescure and Recovery with Rapid Restore Version 2.02.0178 I still cannot figure out how to do that. When selecting Create Recovery Disk(s) (that's a vague translation of the German "Datenträger zur Wiederherstellung erstellen" - the executable file is: C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\crm.exe) from the IBM Access Menu, only one CD is created. I was expecting more like 1+6 CDs as described in various forum postings.

Could anyone send me the directory and file name of the executable that is used for creating the complete set of recovery CDs (see properties)?

Thanks, I appreciate your help.

Bye,
Oliver.

Hi Sookie-

On my T42P system, it is:

Create Recovery Disks:
C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\reccd.exe

Create Rescue Media:
C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\crm.exe

But for some reason I get an "internal error" when I try to make them. IBM is sending me the CDs.

I think the recovery CDs are to restore from scratch the preload installation, while the rescue media is likely the rescue environment that let's you fix a slightly botched existing installation.

If I'm wrong, anyone please correct me.

thanks for the reply. Looks like it's different on a T41p. I actually have the executable you were referring to, but when trying to create the CDs I get an error message complaining about the files missing that are required to create CDs.

I'll think about ordering the CDs.

Oliver.

Rescue and Recovery

Hi guys,

If you are having problems with the Recovery disk.
It might be the software.
Go to ibm.com and use autodetect to dectect your machine and download the latest version of "Rescue and Recovery" abt 400mb and try burning the recovery disks again. You'll need a total of 8 CDs.

Have fun.

T41/p and T42/p use different types of restore partitions,

The parities space or HPA is tough to back up, it is not clearly documentented any place. Even if you add or change anything in that partition, the security will say corrupted and may nto work after that.

For a T41 you are better off ordering the restore cds ..
