problem connecting to wifi

Hello and happy new year to all of you.
I have a linksys wreless-g router wrt54g2 v1 that has been installed at work and I can't find a network connection to it from my T42 with a atheros wireless card. When I travel, I never have any problem to find a connection. The linksys has been set up with a wep key that I have but I first find it. I am 2 feet away so I should have a perfect connection.
Any help would be appreciate.

Check that both router and card are on the same level, i.e. both 802.11b or 802.11g.

This is probably a dumb question, but why not just use an ethernet cable?
