Please help me decide

#1 Post by davidlg16 » Mon Feb 21, 2005 12:41 am

Model Price CPU RAM Screen Graphics HDD Optical Wireless Bluetooth Fingrprt Batt Warranty

2373M3U $1658.30 1.8 512 14SXGA R9600 60-7200 Combo Intel BG yes yes 6 cell 3yr ezserv

2373GVU $1896.30 1.8 512 14SXGA FGL 128 60-7200 Combo IBMabg yes no 9 cell 3yr ezserv

Which one should i get?

Basically, is there a big differnce between the R9600 64mb and the FGL 128mb? is it worth the extra $240?
I think they use the same engine but i'm interested in real life usage like photoshop editing and the occasional HalfLife 2.

*batt form is no concern to me, although nice to have the 9cell, only $100 with current promo.
*the mini pci difference is no conern
*fingerprint scanner is no big deal, although wont hurt to have it :)

Thanks in advance for your inputs

p.s. I currently have the 2378FVU, but i figured after i upgrade warranty, ram and faster HD, the resultant price will be more expensive. So decided to swap for a 2373 model at my school's computer store.

Are those EPP prices?? I'd take a GVU any day over my FVU at that price. It would also hold its value better since it is a 'p'.

Those aren't EPP prices, they are student discounts at my University computer store. they give students 30% discounts on NON-express models.

T42p has drivers for OpenGL which you need if you are using some CAD packages like Solidworks.

I don't think Photoshop uses opengl but you may want more RAM if you use Photoshop alot.

The additional RAM will help when using higher textures and models in gaming. FWIW HL2 automatically picks high details on this card and it looks and works wonderfully. Load times are slow with the stunning graphics but I believe that to be the slow HD. I'll se when I get a 7k60 in a few months.

I would take the second unit anytime without question. The value add of the battery, wireless, and more importantly the video and fingerprint reader make it a better deal. You don't think much of it now, but the reader is pretty cool once you configure it.

The 2nd unit does not have the fingerprint reader...if it does, i won't even consider the 1st unit.

so get fingerprint reader OR
$240 more, no fingerprint reader, but better graphics card with 9 cell
