Linksys WET11 vs. T42 built-in antenna

#1 Post by authenticjt » Mon Feb 21, 2005 3:25 am

My Linksys WET11 is much better at pulling in weak signals than the built-in antenna on my T42. Is this right?

I found it was the same for me. My old laptop didn't have wireless built in and the card was much more effective at picking up signals than the T42 antenna. For example the T42 didn't pick up signals in the next room when I could use the card throughout the house.

In contrast, my T42P with internal WiFi ('ve got the b-only card in my 2373-HTU) gets better reception than my Cisco Airnet 350 wifi PC card.

Seconding Marc_G, my inbuilt card has better signal recognition that my external D-Link DWL650G adapter...

yep,

when i am in the office where the access point is under the table no problem. But move to the garden or when i am sharing at home the internet connection of the neighbours (yep they know, split cost) it is a NOGO and i use an external linksys (wusb54g i think is the type)

this is with a 42p 2373kxu

On a side note, the best built-in Antennas I've seen lately come in those huge blue Toshiba Satellite 15" laptops. Nobody gets anything in our non-wifi lecture halls, but the three people I know with Satellites consistently get strong enough signals for regular browsing and email. I guess that's what a few extra pounds buys you ;)
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

A "few pounds" equals BEHEMOTH!

I've got one sitting here, very nice 15" SXGA+ display, excellent WiFi reception, amazing sound, but placed next to my T40 the thing looks immense!
