Thinkpad wireless BG (Atheros) can't connect using WPA in XP

#1 Post by rookworm » Sun Jan 17, 2010 5:35 am

I have the 7.6.1.260b drivers under XP pro SP3 for the IBM 11b/g WLAN Mini PCI adapter. Works when I disable WPA. Also works when I use the ATH5k driver under linux (with WPA). I have tried using both a passphrase and a 64 digit hex string; neither work. Using Thinkvantage access connections or not makes no difference. No idea how to troubleshoot this. Thanks for your help!!

Maybe you should give it a try to use this older driver (without PCIe support) that worked for me before upgrading to win7:

(page is little bit slow, try to reload if you get an "apologies" page)

Thanks for the suggestion, wouldn't have thought of that. I just tried it, and I have the exact same situation as before with the older driver version. Still stuck. Know where I can find other versions anywhere? Other ideas? Thanks!

edit: it seems I was a little too hasty..... the reinstall is failing for some reason (I guess the latest driver was installed first, so windows is not letting me go down a version)... any hints here ??? Darn those buggy drivers :(

ok, installed the older driver using the Devcon utility (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms792813.aspx).... but still have the same problem. I wonder if I would still have this problem if I were to just buy a usb wireless dongle..... hmm. Any other ideas?

Ok, last try, I have another one:

Version 7.6.1.184
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... wc52ww.txt
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... wc52ww.exe

I used to have two different drivers for my Atheros cards as one made trouble some time ago. This one is also for Atheros b/g and a/b/g II, but not for Atheros a/b/g and a/b. If this one also doesn't work, I would say your windows is screwed up...

PS: Installing the driver via Setup.exe in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANATH should work. Don't try the it using the device manager, that can cause trouble.

Thanks! reverting to te older version (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67214) resolved the problem. I needed to use devcon, then reboot!
