IBM Refurb T2X Laptops: Warranty Question

#1 Post by bmoses76 » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:04 pm

I purchased my refurb'ed T23 about two or so weeks ago (right after I got my taxes filed!) from TigerDirect.

TigerDirect sent me the Thinkpad and on the box was a big sticker that said I couldn't return the laptop if I broke the seal on the box, and that I would have to deal with IBM for warranty service.

According to TigerDirect, I have a 60 day manufacturer warranty. However, when I check online it says I have a warranty on this laptop until mid-July.

Upon opening the the laptop and firing it up, I was disappointed that there seems to be some sort of defect on the LCD that only shows up on really bright screens. The defect appears to be about the size of a thumb-print and I suspect the previous owner might have "squished" a few pixels with an inadvertent thumb-jab.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has purchased a refurbished and dealt with a similar or unrelated repair. I'm worried that IBM may say that this defect is outside the warranty. Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

hard to say without seeing it... if you have an IBM Authorized Service Center near you, you could bring it by to check. Otherwise, you can initiate a claim, they will send you a box, and let you know when they get it.....

The warranty should be good until July. T23s are reliable and you will likely not need the warrantee service again.

The LCD has a pressure mark. IBM used to replace LCDs with them but i have heard different recently.

I would love to hear from anyone who has warranteed a T23 w/ a pressure mark in 2005 & find out the results...

Other than the pressure mark being annoying the screen should be fine.

Send it to IBM for repair if it bothers you.

If they don't repair it and Tiger doesn't take it back, contest it on your credit card.

Good luck and very sorry you had the trouble.

I wound up talking to IBM, they said in my case it would appear that the unit would need replacement rather then shipping out parts to repait it, that I would need to talk to my vendor.

I was a little disappointed in the warranty information I wound up getting from the division of IBM I spoke to. But I did also wind up calling a number that was provided with the machine instead of going through the normal channels.

Thankfully, TigerDirect was very easy to deal with. They're shipping me a replacement T23 as we speak. Lets hope its in better shape than the first one :)

Hi,

So, how did things work out with your replacement T23? I got one from IBM last month, and I couldn't be happier. The only thing that bugs me really is that the left part of the keyboard seems to be hitting on something underneath it when I press the keys in that area somewhat hard. Other than this, the T23 is a winner.
