fingerprint reader problem

#1 Post by Microspeed » Fri Jan 29, 2010 12:21 am

I installed a FPR palmrest on my T43P project. I programed in my finger prints and everything worked fine for a while. Now on boot up is says Device Not found when the FPR software comes up. In conttrol panel there is a test icon for it and it works. In the FPR software I can run the tutoral and works. If I try to edit a current user it once again says it can't find the device. I am stumped any ideas.

This worked when I added an external driver on my docking station: Try removing the reader from devices, then shut down and reboot, letting it find the device again.

Go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Select Thinkpad fingerprint reader software and then click to change it. Try the repair option and after a reboot it should work correctly.

The finger print reader is to scary for me, if it goes belly up you could get locked out. To goofy high tech that can hurt you and what for? Go with tradish password. Just my 0.02 cents

It doesn't REPLACE your password nor the logic that you should change it regularly. It's certainly not goofy. That you don't know the difference between "To" and "Too" explains why you'd be frightened by high tech. You should use your two one hundredth of a cent (.02 cents != 2 cents or $.02), to buy a clue or two.

Seriously, if you're wondering why the flame: It's always annoying when someone answer's a 'how do you fix something' question with a 'you shouldn't use that' answer.

Fingerprint readers are better than a weak password, and for general use they provide enough security. I beleive that there is a 0.01% chance that a random person could swipe in on your account, which compared to a simple password is pretty good. If I had a fingerprint reader, I would use it, because it allows you to have a secure password, write it down and keep it in a safe or something, then lock down the system and swipe to login.

@Microspeed:

Try disabling FPR in BIOS, then enabling it again if killer's suggestion doesn't work...

Good luck.

I did the repair option with no joy. I then checked the driver version and tried to roll it back one. That "seemed" to fix it. Reboot several times thought it was good. Tonight, I turn the unit on; got the device not found, still works in the tutoral, didnt even try the test icon in the control panel. The only other thing that is unquie about the system is that the battery is really in bad shape. I was running on AC as well though. I have switched out the battery for one that I beleive will charge. I Will try George's fix next and report back.

Thanks,
Micro

Tried it all. Got it to work once on a restart but after a shut down it failed to work. Not showing me any love. I can switch out the touchpad and FPR with a different set. My question now is; is it the sensor or the chip? :(

I'm not the smart one when it comes to FPR since I disable it on all of my machines, but I'd try to play with figuring out whether it's software or hardware first...and my initial guess would be software, although I can't point the exact culprit...

Have you tried completely un-installing and then re-installing all FPR-related software, and I mean ALL of it?

OK George, when you say all of it. What else other than the FPR software under install / remove do you mean? Perhaps regedit?
Thank you so much for your help.

gburnore, do you feel better now? I've read about the FPR in this forum and feel the same way as a few of our mods, take a look here and see what you think?

Sorry I side stepped the question, I was just trying to give some advice to a member to avoid the "I'm locked out of my laptop by FPR" post.

Holy smokes! All I wanted was to get my FPR working. Not start a fight. :)
I like the idea of the reader. It works nice on my T61. The T43P I am working on, I hope to use in the field.
BTW I have the software set up is that you can still do the Ctrl, Alt + Del and type your password in, so I haven't been locked out of my notebook. (yet anyway, lol)
At this point I plan on uninstalling the software, delteing any mention of it out of the registery (of course making a backup first) and then doing a fresh install. If the problem presists I will switch out the components. If at that point it still isn't working, I will bag the idea and just type. I will report back and tell you all how I make out.

Thanks for your help

Cool, good luck, sounds like good ideas and you've got yourself "protected". Never having used one I did not realize the ctl/alt/delete was still in place.

Switched out the reader and touchpad. Still no love. Uninstalled everthing including the chip in the device manager. Looked in th registry but did't find anything there. Had to install version 5.62 frist then installed the lastest recomended build version 5.85. It works for now anyway. I will repost if it malfunctions again.
Thanks for you help
