1400x1050 on 14 inch
Is 1400x1050 resolution too high for a 14 inch laptop? Will the text be hard to read and can I choose a lower resolution?

Tough to say unless you've seen it.
For most people with good eyesight it's deemed acceptable, and among members of this forum I'd dare say it's preferred.
YMMV.

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
What will happen if I try a lower resolution on the 1400 x 1050 SXGA screen? BTW, does 1400x1050 screen itself have more pixels than the standard screen? I suppose that's how it works.
I have a 17 inch LCD at 1280 x1024. Will 1400x1050 be much smaller on a 14 inch laptop? The text on the 17 inch can look small, so I am asking first. I am just trying to get all the input I can before I buy. Thanks.

Any resolution apart from the native one will result in somewhat blurry picture.
And yes, 1400x1050 would be the actual pixel count...

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
If you can tell me the size and resolution of the monitor you are currently using, and how far from your eyes you are viewing it, I can calculate how far you should move this monitor to simulate a 14" 1400x1050 screen. If things still look big enough, then the 14" 1400x1050 screen would work fine for you.

The size is 17 inches, the res 1280x1024 and the distance about 18 inches.
Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
You know you can adjust the font size from within your OS. With some tweaking, you should be able to find the right combination to make SXGA+ work for you on a 14" screen. without having to resort to lowering the resolution.JerzeeDevil wrote:Will the text be hard to read...

Does XP have variable font sizes or only normal, small and large (125 dpi)? What about XP Pro?

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
This 17" monitor has 96.42 pixels per inch, whereas the 14.1" monitor you're considering has 124.11. So, move the 17" monitor to 18" x 124.11/96.42 = 23.2" from your eyes. Try to view the monitor at this new distance for at least several minutes while running your favorite applications, and see whether you feel comfortable.JerzeeDevil wrote:The size is 17 inches, the res 1280x1024 and the distance about 18 inches.

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
XP only have the three font sizes. But, many applications allow for variable font adjustment. Firefox, for example, can be set for any font size between 9 and 72 IIRC.

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
I personally love the 1400x1050 definition in 14" and would never go less than that.
(bye bye 1024x768)
In case of XP you can have larger fonts and icons. As others have posted before, Win7 it's even better tweaking the desktop.
Cheers...

I join the group of lovers of 1400x1050 LCD resolution on 14'' display.
Once you get used to it (it took half a day for me), it's like a drug, you can't get back to lower resolutions

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
Yes, you can definitely resize the screen fonts in XP/XP Pro. I went through this exercise because my T60 has the same 1400x1050 resolution and it was giving me such a headache (I am 67 years old). I almost sold the machine because I just couldn't stand the eye stress anymore. But I changed the font size and decided to keep the machine.JerzeeDevil wrote:Does XP have variable font sizes or only normal, small and large (125 dpi)? What about XP Pro?

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
Unfortunately 1400x1050 is becoming so rare on new hardware that I am wondering if I will never buy something new in the future. While the corresponding wide resolution 1680x1050 seems to be rare as much as expensive in both laptop and desktop LCD..

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
1400x1050 has been gone from laptops for a couple of generations now, and it was never popular in desktops (with the exception of low-end non-wide 20" LCDs).
1680x1050 is still obtainable in 22" widescreens as well as 15.4" wide laptops. Both are being phased out now, with 15.4" being replaced by 15.6" wide (with HD, HD+ or FHD resolutions) and 22" widescreen sector moving to 16:9 FHD as well.

Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
My aging T42p has 1400x1050 on a 14" screen.
Re: 1400x1050 on 14 inch
My T61p comes with 1400x1050 and came with Vista Business to begin with and is now Windows 7 Pro. I tried lower resolutions with Vista. I say this about the screen:
1. Even with Vista font smoothing, the lower resolution (1280x1024) was workable and decent, but still not as crisp as native. Do not even consider such a thing with XP.
2. With Vista, the screen lacked contrast for those (many, many) websites that think light blue printing on a white background is ok. It is unreadable.
3. With Windows 7, the contrast, clarity and crispness all improved. The screen is excellent on decent sites, passable on badly written sites.
4. I now use the Microsoft fonts supplied for screen viewing (Tahoma 9 Point). The Microsoft fonts are very good in Windows 7 and 9 point is a better way than DPI to change the size of text. The result is clearer.
Summary:
1. You need excellent eyesight or excellent reading glasses (me) to read the screen comfortably.
2. If you need a reason to swing into Windows 7, this is one of them.

I'm running an X32 with a 12.1" screen at SXGA+ resolution. I love it but some might blanch
My favorite resolutions are 12.1 / 14.1" @ SXGA+ or 15" @ UXGA (1600x1200).
