bluetooth dead or what? t43p 2668-g2g

#1 Post by pelino » Thu Feb 11, 2010 4:28 am

Hi there!
Yesterday I heard the sound of a peripheral connecte-disconnected many times (like when you insert a new usb peripheral: a "dong").
Than I realized my bluetooth mouse was'nt working anymore.
The bluetooth led was on, and pressing fn+f5 I was able to see bt active
but:
in device manager now I only can see the "bluetooth enumerator" and nothing more
the whole system seems to freeze randomly for a few seconds every 2-3 minutes.

Trying to make the system research for peripherals seems not to work.

any help is appreciated :)

Really the problem can be anywhere of the following:

* The Bluetooth mouse itself
* The Bluetooth module inside the Thinkpad
* The internal USB subsystem that the Bluetooth module is connected to (less likely IMO, especially considering that BT is detected and active)

Do other USB devices work?

Is there another computer you can connect the mouse to, to see if it works there?

Hi dr_st, thanks for your time.

sadly the mouse works,
anyway I think I miss a bt piece in my device manager,
the bt is not detected, I don't know how the B can be switched on!

You said that when you press Fn+F5, BT appears as "on" and the led was on. Is this still the case, or has it changed?

The clue I think is the freezing. A lot of T43's I've repaired recently have shown up a particular weakness with the southbridge chip unsoldering - almost more than the graphics chip.

Typical freezing is HDD activity stops and only starts again when you press around the Trackpad area.

The southbridge controls everything on the laptop and may well include bluetooth.

Remove the palmrest and wifi card and when bluetooth goes off - or the laptop freezes - press on the big chip under the wi fi module, which is the southbridge chip.

Other bit of bad news is that if it's the SB, and if it's bonded in place with strips of clear epoxy, it can't be reflowed because the epoxy extends a couple of rows into the solder balls and if you try to reflow the solder balls fly out - also known as popcorning.

Good news is that we are now successfully reballing the SB (in the UK).
