T43 14.1" XGA to SXGA+ trouble

#1 Post by revoldver » Sat Feb 13, 2010 8:18 pm

Hello to all!

I have the IBM ThinkPad T43, Product ID is 1872WAR, type is 1872-CTO, with Intel GMA 900 graphics and 14.1" 1024x768 XGA LCD. Now, I want to replace my 14.1" XGA LCD to 14.1" SXGA+ 1400x1050, but get some troubles. I found three SXGA+ LCDs with covers from T42, T42p and T41 with same mark "93P5571" on the top side of ribbon cable`s MoBo connection unit (sticker). And all of them didn`t work - still black, only backlight and indicators. Current mark on my ribbon cable is "13N7005" and below - "LCD11S13N7043Z1ZAH0067646".

What`s wrong? Do you know what the LCD panel, ribbon cable or combination of resistors on ribbon cable for tested SXGA+ LCDs needed? Or different LCD, e. g. from another SXGA+ T43, needed?

And what types of new LCDs from another manufacturers usable?

Thanks.

Have you tried the "Search" function? I don't have any experience in this area but I do remember seeing a couple of threads regarding LCD swaps. Have you got the correct Inverter?

Edit:

Your current ribbon cable seems to be tied to an XGA screen. If you have the SXGA ready to be hooked up I don't think the XGA will work with it. Take a peek at this.

Click.

Be patient there are some guys around that have done this type of swap many times. It does seem like you're trying to get an SXGA LCD to work with an XGA cable. You will probably need the SXGA cable.

and Edit again:

Thanks @ RBS. I forgot about that! Sorry and good luck to you OP.

Welcome to the forum!

Intel 900-based T43s do not support 14" SXGA+, a number of people has tried this and failed.

Good luck.

Inverter is correct. I tried three SXGA+ assembled panels (LCD panel+invertor+ribbon cable+cover) with ribbon cables.

But an R52 mobo with Intel GPU will work with a 15" SXGA+ screen! (I have one of those).

So do I (actually my wife's R52) and they are extremely stable as well as driving a nice Flexview panel perfectly. I highly recommend this combination. And of course, if you don't like the R form-factor, you could go the route that RBS suggests and put a R52 Mobo in your T.

The problem here is the screen size...none of these mobos will drive a 14" SXGA +....

So, do you have info about Intel GMA900 vs. ATi X300 failure rate/number of failures for T43? Our russian ThinkPad fans told me that X300 usually has an self-unsoldering and overburning problems. Is it true?
Maybe, I will try to replace existing GMA MoBo with a X300 from same T43.
