Will T43 formatted drive operate in T42

#1 Post by burns334 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 8:36 pm

I am putting a T42 together and just got the mobo back from reballing by GPU medics, very fast service by the way. I put the unit back together and slipped in a drive that was built for and operates in a T43. The fan runs, I get the first splash screen and then with a short delay I get the message
"operating system not found". Should I build a drive specifically for this machine? would a drive that operates fine in a T23 work in this T42?

T42 and T43 use a different HAL so issues are quite likely to happen, and the same goes for T2x, the hard drive from it will likely bluescreen in a T4x machine.

I'm surprised that the machine doesn't see anything, though. Is the drive seen in BIOS?

If it is, get a set of proper recovery media and install everything from scratch...

No, the drive is not seen in the BIOS

Actually it goes a little further after the no operating system found. It starts to run some self checks.

If the drive is not seen in BIOS, then:

a) It's not inserted properly or

b) It's defective or

c) IDE controller is shot

Do some more "trial and error" and post back with results...

You are inserting it locked in the caddy with all the screws in their appropriate places, correct?

AJK, a little bit of success, I reseated the drive and now it sees it in the bios, if I let it try to start it comes up with the options of starting in safe mode, with or with out networking and or safe with command prompt. I tried safe mode and it all the files go by but it freezes at the end of that. So I think we are looking at just getting the right s/w on the drive, no?

I have a T42 drive from my old office machine at work and I will take the machine in and give that drive a try. Stay tuned.

As mentioned before "T42 and T43 use a different HAL so issues are quite likely to happen". You will not be able to load a T42 with a drive from a T43. You need to do a fresh install of XP.

SCORE! The machine boots up fine with a drive from a T42. The advice here was good, bios can see that there is a IDE device, it's listed by mfg next to IDE line item but won't boot from it unless its got the right HAL and other things probably. Thanks for the help, off to find a few other things for this machine.

My experience going the other way.
After my T40 died and I received the new T43 sans HDD, I installed the T40 drive into the T43 and it booted fine. Other than the 2010 error and all the drivers being wrong it ran XP fine. In the end I decided it was easier to start fresh rather than upgrade all the drivers. But the T40 was also a new install so data transfer and programs, etc was not an issue.
