How quiet is the T42p?
How quiet is the T42p?
Hi all!
My partner currently has a Thinkpad R51. THis machine is without a single doubt by far the most quiet laptop I've ever been around. The fan is never activated, the only sound we hear is from the hard drive! Unfortunatly the display is a 15" XGA screen which is very poor. I was thinking of getting her a flexview UXGA T42p 2373-W6M. I was wondering, would this also theoretically be very quiet or is it noticeably less silent? Having a 2Ghz CPU and a Firegl gfx card...
Thanks in advance!

Re: How quiet is the T42p?
What is the machine type/model from the sticker on the bottom of the R51? It will be a (7) digit alpha numeric like 2347-2CU. I suspect it has an Intel GPU, and as a result of low heat output is quiet. The T42 series is not too bad on fan noise.
Re: How quiet is the T42p?
Hi Harryc!
Yep, it's the integrated intel graphics one. Can't check the TYPE ref right now, but I can do that first thing tomorrow if you really need to know!
So you mean the T42p will be quiet, but not as quiet as the R51 w/ intel IGP, right...? I thought it would be too good to be true

With a 2.0 CPU and FireGL T2, expect temperatures much higher than you'd get to see on an Intel-based R51.
The good thing about T42p is that M10 long fan is fairly quiet, at least when compared to M24 used in T43/p.

Re: How quiet is the T42p?
With T42 obviously not being easy to come by these days, I know you may not have much of a choice, but if you do manage to find one, I'd suggest a 15" SXGA+ T42 non-P with a Radeon 9600 GPU. Especially if the CPU is <2GHz, the heat output will be far lower, and as a result - the fan will run less frequently and at lower speeds - which in turn leads to a quieter machine.

Re: How quiet is the T42p?
Ah! That's indeed a good idea. Actually, I was aiming towards the UXGA T42p which obviously comes with the FireGL, but I will bear that in mind in case something should show up! Is that 15" SXGA+ also IPS/FV?

Yes, as long as it's 15" SXGA+.

Re: How quiet is the T42p?
You sure, there were no SXGA+ panels NOT Flexview, right? I wouldn't want to have a bad surprise (in the event I should find one of these machines

Re: How quiet is the T42p?
An alternative would be an R52 with Intel graphics and a 15" Flexview SXGA+.
You'd need different RAM and CPU, and the HD might throw up the 2010 error at boot time (which can be auto-bypassed).
But that's a super machine, I have one of those.
However, for some unknown reason a T43 with Intel GPU can not drive a 15" SXGA+.

Re: How quiet is the T42p?
All 15" SXGA+ on R51/T42/T43 were Flexview.
The 15" SXGA+ on R52 was not Flexview. It can be retrofitted, but the panels which left the factory were regular TN panels.
