Thermal Paste / Themal Pad
Thermal Paste / Themal Pad
I will soon be reassembling my T41p and am looking for suggestions regarding thermal paste and pad for the CPU and GPU. The application of thermal paste onto the CPU seems pretty straight forward; apply a thin layer to the small rectangle on top of the CPU where it comes in contact with the copper cooling unit. I would appreciate any suggestions as to paste type or brand.
For the GPU, do I reuse the current pad? It's a pinkish rubber looking rectangle on top of a harder black substance that's attached to the copper cooling unit. I want to make sure I do this right!
Thanks for your help!
Curt

Hi
Regarding thermal compound: I was advised to use Arctic Silver 5. This can be bought in small containers from Radio Shack, I think it was $10. I will use this when I reassemble the T43 in the nearest future.

+1 for Norway Pad. Put on the thinnest of thin layers on the CPU metal plate. Less is definitely more when it comes to heatsink compound.
Re the pink pad on the GPU, reuse that. Make sure there's no black stuff on the area where the pad will sit on the GPU plate. Surplus stuff can be very gently scraped off preferrably using a plastic tool which doesn't scrape the metal.

Re: Thermal Paste / Themal Pad
Corollary question: I have a T-4x Long Fan and the thermal pad has burned up. What kind of material is used for the pad portion that goes on the Graphics chip? Or can I use something else?

Re: Thermal Paste / Themal Pad
The area you need to cover is roughly 30 x 30 mm and the thermal pad has to be about 2mm thick.
A quick eBay check has found this sheet.
The eBay company also advertises on eBay UK and I'd think most other regions.
Don't try to use heatsink compound since it's designed to fill the minute imperfections between two mating metal surfaces.
