Need to create partition for Win2K Pro in T43

#1 Post by yvonnet1960 » Sun Mar 07, 2010 3:47 pm

Need to create partition for Win2000 Pro in T43 with existing WinXP Pro

I have a T43 (2668-94U) with Windows XP Pro COA. I have already backed up
my files and created recovery discs. What I would like to do now is to
create another partition to install Windows 2000 Professional.

1. How do I create the partition using Gparted even with hidden protected
partition in R&R? I have never used this software before. How does one boot
from the disc?

2 If a partition is created, what software(s) would I need to prompt the dual
boot since there would be Windows XP and Windows 2000?

3 And where do I get the drivers for Windows 2000 Professional
for T43 once the OS is installed? Is it the same drivers as Windows XP Prof?

Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum.

Before you do all this, get a USB stick and copy (or burn them on a CD) the following programs:
W2K SP4 from Microsoft
XP SP2 and SP3 from Microsoft
DotNetFramework 2.0/SP1 from MS.
System Update 3.14 from Lenovo
Ethernet network drivers for W2K and XP from Lenovo.

To boot from Gparted, just start the laptop, and immediately press F12 for the boot menu.
Then open the CD drive, insert the Gparted CD.
When back in the menu, select CD/DVD to boot from.
Let's assume you have a 40GB hard disk, with ca. 35GB for XP and 3GB for recovery.
You will then have to 'shrink' the existing 35GB partition to ca. 15GB, starting from the beginning of the hard disk.
Then create a new partition in the free space, of whatever size is left (ca. 20GB).
Format the partition(s) in NTFS.
Remove the CD, and reboot with your W2K disk. Install W2K in the first 15GB partition.
When done, remove the W2K CD and boot with the XP CD, install XP in the larger 20GB partition.
Windows will automatically create the boot-menu so you can choose between W2K and XP.

In the W2K partition install:
W2K /SP4
DotNetFramework 2.0/SP1 from MS.
System Update 3.14 from Lenovo
Ethernet network drivers for W2K from Lenovo.
Run System Update to get all the IBM/Lenovo drivers

In the XP partition install:
XP SP2 and SP3
DotNetFramework 2.0/SP1 from MS.
System Update 3.14 from Lenovo
Ethernet network drivers for XP from Lenovo.
Run System Update to get all the IBM/Lenovo drivers

Set aside at least half a day for this.
Have fun.

NOTE: you MUST install W2K first, then XP.
For this type of installation you can NOT use your recovery disks!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thank you for the help.
Luckily I was able to resolve the problem another way. I installed some drivers and it fixed the said program from crashing.
I no longer need to run this in win2k. I did c&p the instructions as it is very helpful.

BTW, I am running R&R 2.04.0182. Every time I run the backup there would be an error stating the program need to be closed and prompt me if I want to send a report. Yet when I run the R&R again, the previously "closed" program is running and the backup seems good. Should I download Rescue and Recovery 4.21? Is the newer 4.21 version of R&R straightforward to replace my current version? And is 4.21 backward compatible with my previous backups? Thanks.
