T42 + ATI Radion 7500 + Windows 7

#1 Post by rwilcher » Sat Mar 13, 2010 12:06 pm

Subject says it all. Casting about for a windows 7 video driver for
this dinosaur . Machine is really snappy with win7 but I need a a better
driver to stop BSOD's . Anyone got a clue? I don't unfortunately. Tried
to get catalyst driver but the driver I got is a bit flaky. :(

You need to search the web for a modded driver...

Also, take a look here:

Good luck.

I have used the driver included in vista for the mobility radeon 9000, and that worked fine, no bluescreens. If you need it, post back and I will send it to you.

Good luck

The Radeon 9000 and (non-mobility) 7500 drivers should be built in to Win 7 (they are in Vista). But it's rather convoluted to get to them - they don't appear on the standard list of drivers in the hardware wizard - you need to uncheck a box for "compatible hardware only" (or words to that effect) in the wizard. I found the 9000 Vista driver worked fine on the T4x 7500 GPU but the (non-mobility) 7500 driver gave more resolution settings. I never could find a mobility 7500 driver in Vista. (My understanding is that Win 7 uses mostly Vista drivers)

Convoluted is right I have been unable to find the bloody thing  if anybody knows anything about the win7
retardation , please pipe up. I did it in vista ,win7 is a wall of goo here.
Thanks.

Not T4x related, but I had Win7 Ultimate with an X31 using the XP drivers. Everything was working fine, could watch videos (no HD!), browse the web and use office without any issue. And that was an older and less powerful card than the ATI 7500.

If I were you I would try using the XP drives from the Lenovo site and see how it works.

My 0.02 cents...

The Mobility Radeon X1400 driver is in Vista but not 7 (you can get it through Windows Update, though), so I doubt it.

I can confirm that (non-Mobility) FireGL T2 driver on Windows 7 DOES work on T41p/T42p as I installed Win7 on my T41p yesterday and manually chose to install FireGL T2 driver.

After WEI assessment Aero kicked in ok and video performance was very good: 3,2 and 3,4 respectively.

I made some "before/after" tests also. In 3DMark2001SE I got 10700 points using XP SP3, in Win7 with the Win7 FireGL T2 driver score was 7700 points. Rather good considering that 3DMark 2001SE always results less score in Win7 vs XP.

Oh, I have Dothan 1.7 GHz installed in my T41p, not original Banias 1.7 GHz.

One more mod I'm goint to perform is using Dothan 750 and overclocking the chipset to 533FSB.

Fire GL T2 is officially supported by both Vista and W7 where Radeon 7500 is not...

Nice to hear. Did you get the (non-Mobility) FireGL T2 driver that is in the win7 O.S or from somewhere else?
And what the heck is Dothan 1.7 GHz? Thanks for the help. :D

The driver for non-Mobility FireGL T2 was included in the Windows7 itself, just have to choose to select from all the drivers, not just compatible ones.

Dothan 1.7GHz is Pentium M CPU with 2MB L2 cache. Originally T41p came with 1.7 GHz Pentium M that has 1MB L2 (codenamed Banias).
