How to change ACPI trigger temps?

#1 Post by atanasoff » Thu Mar 18, 2010 9:02 pm

There are 2 event triggering temps visible through Mobile Meter (T40p).
A) "Passive Cooling" downshifts the cpu speed
B) "Critical Temp" shuts down.

In deference to the general age of the machine and the GPU solder issue I'd like to change these, but know of no way to do so. This is not a fan speed issue: the fan has already upshifted to max well before these temps are reached. I want to lower the maximum likely (A) and maximum possible (B).

How are these adjusted?

btw, is there any way to estimate the remaining service life in a particular Thinkpad? I define service life as when it would require a major repair - $75 or a finicky multi-hour procedure. Neither is a good investment on a machine this old.

This thread should give you most of the answers: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=58408

As to the time-to-live estimate, stick your finger in your mouth and wet it, then hold it up in the air.
If you feel a breeze coming from the north, expect 2 years, from the south: 3 years, from the west: 1 year, from the east: buy a new laptop now! :??:
Seriously though, if you treat them well, they can last for another 5 years or more.
Look at all the old TP 3xx, 5xx, 7xx models that are still working.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
