Did i make a mistake by buying a T42p?

#1 Post by Outatime1989 » Wed Mar 24, 2010 8:10 pm

I have a t23 but i wanted a bit more power, larger resolution, and internal wireless so i found a t42p for 140 total. This seems kind of cheap for one of these but it shows it boots to bios, i was just wondering if its going to be sitting on a table for most of its life, or just lifted gently from the table to my lap if i have much to worry about as far as the gpu issue. heres the auction link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0453726649

You may handle it gently, but the issue is how did the last owner treat it? They may have babied it or they may have been rough with it, but you have know way of knowing. It's a good price, but there's some risk involved and I've seen it go both ways on eBay. From the terms of the warranty, it doesn't even sound like you're getting a DOA warranty:

Sounds like they're standing behind their sales. Do you have an ideal budget?

Assuming that the machine doesn't have a GPU problem, you've done OK.

If it does, you'll have to part it out to get the $$$ that you put in, and may still come short...

Good luck.

Buy it and if the GPU problem appears, have it reflowed by someone who has proper skills and equipment.

I've reflowed around 15 T4x planars, most of them had 9600 or FireGL T2 GPU's and just one was not working correctly afterwards and that was some other damage besides GPU problem.

Me and my wife both use reflowed T41p and T42p's for almost a year now, no problem whatsoever.
