fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
Hello thinkpad forum,
I have this strange problem with my new fan on the T41p, 2374: After replacing my old fan which broke down the other day (fan error after booting), the new fan starts immediately (!) after booting in high-speed mode and stays like that. I could silence the whole thing down with TPFcontrol under windows, and the computer itself does not get hot at all (by feel of my hands), and the readings from TPFControl on the main parts are ok: cpu: 35°, gpu: 43° (after 10min of Prime95 CPU torture testing).
However, the APS (0x79) reading permanently shows a value of above 60° - already 5min after booting. Within Ubuntu (jaunty) this leads to a abnormal system shutdown within the first 10min - although the computer's just idle - syslog telling me:
kernel: [ 231.338063] ACPI: Critical trip point
kernel: [ 231.338076] Critical temperature reached (93 C), shutting down.
Win XP also shuts down from time to time, however, not as often and not as fast as under Linux.
As far as i understand, the APS is the active protection system (http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/ma ... tpaps.html), so things i've tried include:
- deactivating the APS manually in windows (ThinkVantage => Active Protection System)
- reinstall windows without the APS installed in the first place
- update BIOS from Lenovo site
- update the Embedded Controller Program from Lenovo site
- remount the fan with the arctic silver compound instead of the original one
- taking off all items i did not need immediately (WLAN-card, CD-ROM, etc.)
- i also did heaps of tests with the UltimateBootCD without the pc shutting down
But the problem remains in windows and linux.
Please can anyone tell me what's going on? Is the systemboard finished? Why does the APS need a thermal sensor in the first place? Can i circumvent this sensor safely? how do i do this?
Many thanks in advance - i think this is a great forum, so am sure, someone knows a solution. hopefully.

Welcome to the forum.
Did you get the correct part number, with the correct plug?
Did you 'force' the plug in "the other way around"?
How much thermal paste did you use (you don't need more than the size of a rice corn)?
If you applied too much, maybe some false contact(s) was/were established.

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
thanks for the fast answer:
- my old fan was 13R2657 - the replacement says 41W5204 (which should be ok according to http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=457413 , no?)
- i already tried with different amounts of thermal paste - to no avail. and: the CPU-temp reads perfectly fine - this i where i put the paste, no? as far as i found out, the APS (0x79) sits besides the fan, no? (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/File:T43- ... ensors.jpg)...
- what do you mean with "force the plug in the other way around"? - the fan just sits there like the old one did - looks good - no force needed so far...
what makes me wonder is, that i can do heaps of tests with the ultimatebootCD without the pc shutting down (although the fan spins in high velocity) - but as soon as i start an operating system, the problems come up....
am desperate...

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
The fan plug has 3 wires. If you force the plug in the other way around, the mobo cannot control the fan speed or even sense that it is going.
That's why I asked if you forced it in.
Take the hard disk out, then run a live Linux CD (Knoppix/Ubuntu/Mint etc.). Does it still have this behavior?
If so, you have a motherboard problem.

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
same behaviour with harddisk removed, running Ubuntu Live-disk.
Installed lm-sensors - temp2 (APS - 0x79) still reads above 60°, 5min after booting
fan is working at high speed all the time
although now ubuntu is not shutting down immediately (the computer is now running for 20min or so...)
so only thing I can do is replace motherboard?
am still wondering why then all the tests don't fail with UltimateBoodCD?

Have you done all the tests with PC Doctor?
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-56222
Burn the CD from this ISO. Then run it both with and without HD installed.

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
Finally, all PC-Doctor tests finished.
The notebook was running for the last 24 hours or so - without shutting down: testing, testing, testing... (the memory test took about 10 hours)
Although the fan was running on high speed all the time.
All tests passed - no problem so far - with and without HD.
What else is there i could try?

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
well i think there is not much more i can do. am now looking for mobo-replacement. can anyone tell me what are compatible systemboards?
my thinkpad-data as read out from AIDA 32 on a coolish and windy day (with the door open so it stays under 67 degree on the APS - freezing my a** off)
Model: 2374-GGU
S/N: 99-YGCH8
Mobo-Chipset: Intel Odem i855PM
Mobo-Serialnumber: J1V9545B1UV
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1700 MHz 600MHz (1.5 x 400MHz)
CPU-external Clock: 400 MHz
CPU-Voltage: 1.5V
Memory: DDR-SDRAM, 64-bit, 167 MHz (DDR) real clock; 333 MHz effective clock;
Video: ATI Mobility FIRE GL T2 (128 MB)
Monitor: 1400x1050 LCD 14"
please help and point me towards compatible models - i need to repair this notebook as i cannot afford a new one and need to work without being cold all the time
many thanks in advance!

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
The straight replacement for your T41p motherboard is:
System board assembly, ATI M10 GL-128, Gigabit Ethernet with security chip for T41p, 93P3313
Get this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464
Any T41/T42/R51 mobo will fit, but not all of them may support SXGA+ or have less powerful graphics.

Re: fan issue: strange sensor readings on APS (0x79)
SOLVED - CASE CLOSED!
new mobo arrived today - chucked it in - and works like a charm...
all sensor-readings back to normal.
thanks again RealBlackStuff for bearing with me
