T43 locks up during bootup

#1 Post by burns334 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 9:49 pm

I have a T43 that I am putting together and it locks up during boot up. It makes it to the desktop and the icons start to load in the system tray. The last thing that loads is Avast and it has a yellow triangle in lower corner and that's where it stops. The screen has a full desktop, cursor and hour glass frozen in the middle of the screen. This hard drive works perfect in another T43 that I have. If I swap hard drive to the other machine, no probs.

Most likely a loose Southbridge chip.

Have your USB ports been acting up? Have you had the problem of the machine not seeing the hard drive?

YES, it will not see one hard drive that I tried but will see another one, could not figure out why. Each hard drive works fine in one machine but only one works in the other. This Southbridge is epoxied down, aw $hit.

Well, if you carefully remove the epoxy ( easier said than done, I know) it can still be re-balled.

And the prices of T4x units have gone down tremendously, so getting a new planar should not be as expensive as it would've been a year ago.

Good luck.

I purchased a used and tested motherboard and base from a well known ebay seller and and swapped it out for my base. Just moving over the ethernet card, wifi card and LCD and low and behold same problem. Sometimes it will boot without freezing up but 3 out of 4 it locks up after it gets to the desktop. I removed the 2 cards and still the same problem. Is this a bad board? or am I missing something? TIA
