Returns to standby (sleep) immediately after waking.

This is a brand new issue and I can't relate it to any modifications such as updates, new software, or system changes.

The problem:

1. We put our T43 into standby mode. (Closing the lid, Fn-F4, anything -- how we do it makes no difference to what happens next).
2. An hour or so we try to take the computer out of standby (open the lid, press the FN key, press the power key, anything -- the method makes no difference to what happens next).
3. The computer will wake as usual, to the sign-on screen.
4. Soon after, the computer will return to standby. Sometimes this happens before we can sign-on. Sometimes it doesn't happen until we arrive at the desktop. But it always happens.
5. This time when we return to the desktop, there is no problem.

This is becoming quite an issues for us. Has anyone else experienced this; and can anyone direct us to a solution?

That was the first thing I tried.

Well, actually the second thing. I explored the power manager settings to see if anything had been changed; and that provided no help; so I did a check for updates and installed the new power manager. No help!

I actually have two T43's, slightly different models. I am only having this poblem with one of them, although both of them run the same OS, have the same software, etc. If there are any differences, it would be that the one that has no problem has more apps installed than the one that does.

Unless it is a mechanical issue, and I can't see the logic of that at the moment, it almost has to be a settings problem. But I can't think of what settings to check. I will say that navigating the power settings of a Thinkpad is one of the most non-intuitive thinks I have ever done; and I have worked on computers for years.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no problem with the lid switch. It passes all the tests I can think of: Closing the lid puts the computer in standby; opening it takes it out of standby.

However, before we get caught up in looking for a mechanical issue, let me remind you that this problem happens even when the lid is not involved: Using a menu to enter standby and either the FN key or the POWER button to leave standby results in the same problem.

Thanks so much for the link. And it may prove to a solution eventually. But the product for us happens almost instantly. Open lid, log on screen is displayed, wait a few seconds or enter password (it will make no difference) and arrive at desktop, and system goes directly into standy. Also, this is standby-related rather than hibernation-related.

Now it is possible that somehow or another the computer's XP inactivity test is set not for 5 minutes of inactivity, but 5 seconds! I will definitely explore this.

Problem solved ... and this is very embarrassing.

First the clue:
I noticed that there was a quick flash of a message originating from the notification tray ("systray" to some of you) right before the falling back into standby.

So I made it a point to watch that area real carefully. The message turned out to be from the hardware manager that I could safely remove the DVD drive.

Immediately (and wrongly) I assumed that this had something to do with the EasyEject Utility or with the DVD driver. Since it was apparant nothing was wrong with the DVD drive and it was firmly in position, it couldn't be a physical problem

Perhaps I should actually remove the DVD drive and replace it? Naw, that would be an utter waste of 45 seconds, I thought. (Can you see it coming?)

So instead I did what any software as opposed to hardware engineer would do: I uninstalled the EasyEject Utility.

Of course that did nothing.

So I decided to get my hands dirty. I turned the computer over and noticed that there was the tiniest protruberance from next to the DVD drive. Yep, somehow my wife had brushed the DVD lock switch (probably while removing it from the case on a business trip) and had managed to unlatch the DVD drive. I removed the drive, replaced it, and re-latched it. Problem solved.

Except I had to spend ten minutes reinstalling the EasyEject utility.

Thank you all for your suggestions and interest. I will now bury my head in shame.
