LCD Backlight problems...

#1 Post by jlambert6 » Thu Apr 22, 2010 12:03 pm

Hi all,

I am looking for confirmation on my suspicions of what is going on with my LCD, or other direction if I am wrong. My screen on boot had a pinkish-red tint to it and began becoming dimmer over time. The backlight recently started going off after several seconds of the computer being on and I have been having to use an external monitor which works fine.

I ordered a new CCFL for the LCD and replaced it yesterday. The screen afterwards was like new and very bright but after about 30 seconds of it being on, it suddenly went black again, although the image on the LCD is still visible with a flashlight or at certain angles.

As of now, I think the CCFL needed replacing anyways, due to the pinkish tint at first. But I am also thinking that the Inverter needs replacing. I have found a source to order one from but want to know what others think is going on before I order it.

I should also mention that after replacing the CCFL, there was a loud buzzing sound coming from the Inverter if the screen was set to anything but 100% brightness.

Cheers on the help.

Welcome to the Forum.
From your description, you indeed needed a new CCFL. Nice that you could do this yourself!
Provided you didn't cause a 'short' via a false contact, the inverter sounds as if it too is gone.
A new one should solve the problem.

But make sure first that both LCD-cable ends are fully inserted!

Thanks for your quick reply.

I don't think it was a short, because once the screen was on, I was simply checking email to test it out and poof, backlight goes out, this was all after having adjusted the brightness up and down to test and hearing buzzing sounds from the Inverter.

I must say though, I have been building computers all my life, but replacing that CCFL was the worst 6 HOURS of my life.

After having done 1/2 a dozen or so, I can now do them in about 40 minutes, but yes it's a PITA.
Most people will either replace the LCD or the whole lid.
