T43 2687-D4U, 15" Flexview with the ATI video
I am in China for a semester and a month ago the screen went very dark, like the backlight (?) was gone. Brought it to Lenovo and, after two weeks, they returned it with a new LCD and LCD cable. Machine works fine for two weeks then...
Incident #1- April 15-TP was in suspend, I plugged something (MagicJack) in the USB and when i tried to wake up the machine, the screen was very dark. Strange thing is that the screen was not the one you get to "log in as user" when we end suspend, but the Last scree in use.
Incident #2 April 19- Again, awake from suspend hit arrow key as it was getting up and same scenario as #1
Incident #3 April 23-Screen was off, but computer was NOT suspended, hit spacebar to get screen on, screen came on briefly and then went dark
Incident #4 In suspend, put thumb drive into USB port, went to end suspend and again, very dark screen.
In all cases to "fix" things I would go back into suspend and then wake it up and things were fine. I am back in the US in two weeks and will wait to return to send it back to Lenovo (I still have 7 months on warranty) but want some heads up as to what might be going on here.

Re: T43 Screen problems, part 2
Since the LCD had been replaced already, try replacing the backlight inverter.

Stuart,
I don't have any info about what repair(s) your ThinkPad might need, but i have read that plugging or unplugging USB devices while a computer is in suspend or hibernate and then waking it (as in your examples 1 & 4 above) can cause wacky behavior.
