Asking for help to save my IBM T42
Asking for help to save my IBM T42
My laoptop IBM T42 2378 DUU was dead(Window XP was formated), and I push ACCESS IBM button, but there is no Rescue and Recovery, so I bought IBM Rescue and Recovery CDs. Then, installed all the 8 CDs, and restarted my laptop, however my laptop is still dead, only give me Rescue and Recovery screen, not the expected Window XP screen. And I use ACCESS IBM again, the same as before, no any change.
so, what should I do, buy Window XP as well, then install it?
Could someone give me suggestion or idea? Thanks a lot.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
You have to "Restore Factory Contents" twice. First from the CD's, then from Rescue and Recovery on the hard drive. Your computer will reboot several times.

May you say in details, how to install twice? what is the means reboot several times? Thanks.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
If you now have Rescue and Recovery installed on the hard drive, choose the option within Rescue and Recovery to "Restore Factory Contents". That should be all you have left to do. Just watch the display for any further instructions during the Windows installation.
DKB
Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
Firstly, I opened my laptop, and insert CD 1-1, and later on, choose "Restore Factory Contents".
2nd, insert CD 7-1 as the display for any further instructions during the Windows installation.
3rd, insert CD 7-2,7-3,....,7-7 as the display for any further instructions during the Windows installation.
4th, restart my laptop as the display for any further instructions during the Windows installation.
when my laptop restarted, there is the only content in the screen is Rescue and Recovery stuff.
So could you tell me is there thing wrong I did, and what should I do next(could you tell me step-by-step since I know nothing about computer)? Thanks a lot.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
You do next what I wrote in my last post. You don't need to use the CD's anymore.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
could you tell me in details? I click the 'Restore factory contents',, then, click 'ok', and then, dialog appear:
if you continue, all data and partition will be deleted from your hard disk. Do you wan to transfere the hard disk to other medias before you continue. YES/NO
What shoud I choose? Yes or No?
I do not understand this sentence. could you explain it for me, and tell me what is your choice if it is your laptop. Thanks.
I have nio idea about computer including software/hardware. sorry for that.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
if I delete all the partition, can R&R CDs restore to factory seting for me?
Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
a message appeared:
"The software you are installing for this hardware: Intel(R)PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibilly with Windows XP"
So, what should I do? Thanks.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
Just click on OK. Don't worry about those "has not passed Windows Logo testing" messages when installing from the CD's or other reputable source.

also,one more message:
"The file 'HXFSetup.exe' on Modem Installation Disk is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

So where is it? Thanks.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
'HXFSetup.exe' should be in C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\SWMDMCNT\
You can download and install drivers and software from the following link.
Drivers and software - ThinkPad T42, T42p
In the past anyway, you had to double-click on the downloaded software to extract it's contents to your hard drive, then you have to run setup.exe (or similar *.exe file) from the appropriate subdirectory of C:\Drivers\. You can find out what software is in each subdirectory of C:\Drivers\ by opening .XML file there in wordpad. I read on this forum that recently Lenovo changed the software installation procedure so that you do not have to perform this extra step of running setup.exe. I have not verified this for the T42 software though.
An alternative that probably would be good for you is to install ThinkVantage System Update.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
my laptop is installed completely except the wireless stuff.
There is no wireless icon in my laptop, and I checked using PC-DOCTOR, but not passed, and result as following:
Devices: Inter(R) PRO/1000MT Mobile Connection - Packet Scheduler Miniport
Description: Network Communication Test
Result: NA
So, could someone tell me how to handle it, or how to deal with my wireless stuff. Thanks.
BTW, Really appreciate your help/suggestions during my reinstallation. Thanks again.

Intel PRO 1000 is your wired LAN, not wireless.
Your wireless driver (Intel 2200BG):
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... wc05ww.zip
After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.
Hope this helps.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
I've had better success downloading my driver for the WiFi directly from Intel.
Here's a location (sorry for the length):
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchR ... ilyId=1783
It downloads a file called ICS_X32 (for Windows XP) which gives a pretty slick interface to the WiFi card. Works for quite a variety of Intel WiFi cards, although it doesn't seem to like the 2100; it passes control to Windows native and sits there telling me no supported devices are found. But with my 2200 cards it works great.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
First install an antivirus program. I personally use Avira AntiVir.
http://www.free-av.com/
Next you should go to Windows Update and update Windows to a current version (your version of Internet Explorer is out of date). You should install Service Pack 3 from Windows Update (a large download), but it may not be available until you update other Windows files first, including Service Pack 2 and possibly Service Pack 1. You will need to go to Windows Update several times and reboot after installing each set of updates. When you go to Windows Update and there are no updates left, then you are done.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/down ... fault.mspx
Finally, you may find Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Chrome to work better for you than Internet Explorer. It's up to you.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
do you mean I should download Service Pack 2 and possibly Service Pack 1 in advance, and then I will be allowed to downlaod Service Pack 3.
After that, I have to install the Service Packs start from Service Pack 1 to Service Pack 3.
Am I right? Thanks a lot.

Just get SP2, it already includes SP1. Then install that.
Then get SP3 and install.

I downloaded and installed SP3, however the problem is still existing, that is, a little change, no more error message appeared, but sometimes if I touch my laptop or move my laptop from one table to another table, it will be black screen and then shut down, and sometimes, restart again automatically.
Could someone help me for that? Thanks a lot.

Sticky at the top of this forum: t42 shuts down when i move it:
2nd Sticky at the top of the forum: GUIDE: Reflow GPU fix - 56K WARNING!!!
Basically your ATI graphics chip has bad solder joints on the motherboard. Since the ATI graphics chip is a Ball grid array, resoldering requires special eguipment, or at the least a special procedure. If it was me, I would consider sending it out to be "reflowed".
EDIT: There are some other related stickies at the top of this forum. Check them out as well.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
thanks guys, your suggestions are really helpful, and everything was done,
however, two more thing:
1. when I maxmize browser, it covered full screen, and I can not see the bottom.
2. My laptop can not be turned off unless I hold 'power' button for 10 seconds or longer. When I click 'shut down', it allways appear a dialog box and ask me to click 'end now', and I click that, but it still be the same screen, meanwhile if I try use some program, it says, ' you can not use it, because your computer is turning off '. The longest time I wait for this situation is 4 hours, it did not turned off eventrally.
So could someone help me to handle it also? Thanks a lot.

Re: Asking for help to save my IBM T42
The little window asking to "end now" or "cancel" should have the name of the program or process in the top line of hte window.
If there is no name in the window, it might be a virus that is preventing your system from shutting down.
Hope this helps.
