Problem with USB ports?

#1 Post by JohnV » Tue Mar 01, 2005 7:39 pm

I have been getting a message that there is a power surge on my USB ports. The message suggests that I remove anything that is plugged in the USB ports and ten reset them. The problem is when that message pops up I dont have anything plugged into the ports at all. Has anyone else seen this issue?

What devices are you attaching to the ports when you get these error messages?
Legacy A3/R3/R4/R5/T2/T3/T4/X2/X3/X4
Current R5/R6/T4/T6/X4/X6/Z6/
Lenovo C100/N100/V100

I have the exact some problem once in a while. It's never happened with anything plugged into the ports. I have a t42 3xu.

I use a USB thumb drive and a USB DVD burner every once in a while. Though I have never had these items plugged in when the message comes up.

By the way I have a 2379-DXU

Ok this problem seems to be happening more now tonight. Has anyone come across any info on this issue?

On a good not I did find that there is a checkbox under the USB drivers that allows you to turn off the error messages. Though it does not solve the issue it will at least stopp the pop-up messages.

LOL, reminds me of some years back when I worked in the support department of a very large computer company. Sometimes, customers would get unexplained error messages (with no apparent problem. The solution from engineering would be to remove the error messages from the error message list in the OS.

I have this same problem on my T43 (and have been looking around the forums at similar posts). My theory was that the USB device was the fingerprint reader, and that a short drop had jarred something loose, causing the power surge.

Now I'm not so sure about the fingerprint reader, and think that it may have been caused by me taking the keyboard out to clean it (spilled OJ on it -- seriously, the kb has amazing design!) and replacing it, not screwing something somewhere tight enough...

BUT: my main point here is that has anyone else noticed their tp running at higher voltage? I get the error message on both AC and battery power, but I noticed that on battery power, the Battery Information tab in the (IBM) Power Manager says voltage is above 12 volts! Can anyone tell me if this is related?
