I just bought a new heatsink/fan assembly for my ThinkPad. When it arrives, I'll be glad to be rid of the whirring the fan creates, but what's to stop it from happening again?

Does anyone really know why T4x series fans can become so noisy?

I originally posted this, but having taken another look at the thing, I've decided that without exerting massive amounts of force it will be impossible to seperate the fan from the heat sink.

"Hi, I'm considering replacing the fan in my T43p (getting quite loud) and I would rather not buy a whole fan/heatsink assembly. Buying the fan alone seems to be like £30 cheaper than buying a heatsink as well.

If I just buy the fan, how do I remove the existing fan from the heatsink and replace it with the new fan?"

Yeah I myself had made a post there, and that the topic and discussion there does not answer my rather more specific question, which is not simply about replacing the entire fan and heatsink assembly. That's easy and anyone can do it.

My issue is that whilst these heatsinks/fans can be replaced as much as you like, what's to stop it from getting noisy again? What's the root cause of the problem?

I linked to that post because one person there fixed the fan with Castrol oil, and it's still OK after a couple of years.
Thought you could learn from that... (and save money to boot).

oh right. Well, I've done it now, but since I'll have a working fan/heatsink I won't have anything to lose by experimenting on the old one. Thanks for the tip.
