My T42 broke down

#1 Post by goka » Wed Mar 02, 2005 5:24 pm

This sunday my screen just died on me when I pressed a key. I restarted and now the screen worked again for awhile, but then it suddenly became all corrupt and distored. There was still a visible image, and I could just see the cursor moving, but it was rellay ugly looking. then it died on me again.

Every time I restarted it worked for awile, and I had it running for several hours just backing up my harddrive without any trouble.

On monday I worked on it for almost a whole day, but then it suudenly went black on me, and after a restart and a few minutes of work it turned all white (!). Very strange behaviour, don't you think?

IBM support concluded that it might be a hardware error, so it's currently at the repair center where I just looked up the status on it. It was waiting for this:

"System board assembly for ATI M10-64, Gigabit Ethernet with security chip for T42 series"

I guess there were something major wrong with it...:-)

It's going to be interesting to see if it has been a hardware error from day one, because I have never been impressed with my 2373-JXG (1,7 Ghz, 15-inch SXGA) - it has been rather slow actually. I've always thought that it might be Norton antiVirus, or something like that, but...well, we'll see.

To be continued!

That sounds exactly like what I am going through with my 2378FVU right now.

All right this is getting downright suspicious... I had a video adapter that went out on me right out of the box with my M3U but manifested itself initially only locking up in certain games. However, it gave that characteristic what screen whenever it would lock. I wonder if IBM just had a bad batch of those video chips or something. *shrug*

Ok - now it's one week since it broke down, and still no date on when the spare part is coming. Guess that IBM service isn't up to US standards in Sweden. :-(

I hope to get a call today that tells me a) when my computer is back, and b) if I could get a replacement until it's ready.

For someone like me who is working as an consultant it's pretty awkward to lend an old Compaq laptop from the customer/employee just because of IBM not giving professional service.
