You might buy the drive separately from the external box with USB 2.

I have been using for 5 months now exactly what you are looking for...Thinkpad wrote:Im looking for a back up external hard disk drive, but have a few specifications--

I bought a 2.5" usb chassis from www.startech.com and slipped a Fujitsu Model # MHU2100 into it...
Works great...!
This drive is perfect, it is slow(meaning low-powered) and it works great off my USB2 ports on T42 and desktop at work and at home.

The key is a low-powered drive. This drive is low-powered and you get 100G capacity...
get whatever decent 2.5" chassis ou see out there...just don't go cheap on it...get a decent one...
FWIW.
The Seagate Momentus line has a 100GB 2.5" drive as well. I agree that the only USB-powered drives you will find will be 2.5" ones. Not only does this cap you at 100GB (currently), it also drives up the price per GB by a factor of 4! 2.5" 100GB drives can be found for around $180, whereas you can find a 200GB 3.5" drive for around $90.
Of course, USB-powered is great and there is a big size difference as well. Just know what it's costing you. As a hybrid, you could find a 3.5" drive enclosure that has a built-in power adapter, allowing it to use a standard AC cord instead of the standard two-cord, power brick setup.
Anybody know if there are 3.5" Firewire-powered drives available? I know Thinkpads don't have a port, but maybe the poster already has a Firewire PCMCIA card or something... I was under a vague impression that Firewire could channel more power to devices than USB.
