2373 boot from USB?

#1 Post by Harley » Tue May 18, 2010 1:21 pm

Is there any way to make a 2373-72U boot from a USB hard drive? The BIOS boot menu lists the option but doesn't seem to be 'available'. Some later BIOS? Workaround? Thanks. GA

BIOS: Make sure that it's actually on the list of allowed devices.

It may be off the list. Go into the BIOS boot section and verify. If it's in the lower section, then it's been taken off the list and must be put back on as per instructions on that page.

I put USB hard drive and floppy on the list to make sure.

Finally, if the USB device are not above the hard drive in priority on that list, then you will have to press F12 while booting to choose them.

BOOTABLE: Is your USB device capaple of booting and also setup to boot?

What kind of USB device are you trying to boot? Has it worked on other machines? Some USB flash won't boot, they say.

Is your USB device set to be bootable?

An easy one is to go to the http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ site and download their program for setting up a bootable pen drive. Try Linux Mint, it works well. Then test that on your Thinkpad for booting.

Thanks Steve, I *finally* figured out that it only allows 8 items in the boot list and when the list is full, one has to be removed in order to add another. It is now the way I want it. I am not using a Flash/USB, but will use a Linux system installed and bootable on an external drive to keep from fighting with a dual boot setup. Again, thanks for moving me in the right direction.
