Access Connections vs Windows

#1 Post by kbrazil » Thu Mar 03, 2005 9:19 am

I recently had to send my T40 (2372-92U) into IBM for repairs ( new HD, new system board, new combo drive ). It's come back working better than ever, except that both IBM Access Connections and Windows seem to be managing my wireless connections - making a fast connection crawl.

I've searched the forum for a post detailing how to disable Windows' control, but have come up blank, I thought it was something to with disabling the Wireless Zero Config in services, but that seems to affect Access Connections too. I know there used to be a FAQ on this, but the search is not turning it up.

Tnx,
Keith

I don't think you have to disable Wireless Zero Config (I don't), but you can go into the properties of the Wireless Connectoid and ensure that Windows management is turned off (Wireless tab). ... JD Hurst

In fact, if you do (disable it), it will add significantly to your boot time.

That's the problem I've been experiencing is that I have to disable WZC to get Access Connections to work properly. If I disable it, my boot time increases by a minute, which stinks. So, I ended up using the Microsoft WZC instead of boot connections because I really only go to three places where i need wireless and I don't need special advanced options, but it still stinks that M$ punishes us by adding a minute to the boot time if you don't use their utility...

Matt - something is wrong. You should not have to disable Wireless Zero Config for Access Connections to work. Consider completely uninstalling Access Connections, restarting and installing the newest version 3.7.

I had nothing but problems with Access Connections. I completely uninstalled it, and everything is fine. My boot time WITHOUT AC is much faster.

I still don't understand the purpose of AC. It seems to reproduce everything that Windows XP already does, and does just fine, in my opinion. I travel between many wireless networks, and I have no problems using any of them.

If someone can explain to me what AC brings to the table, please do.

I have different connections depending upon where I'm at:
Home wired
Home wireless
Office
Office wireless
Cafeteria wireless
Library wired
Starbucks

and it is so nice, I switch between them.

A friend with a Compaq laptop tried to use Access Connections but it will only work on the IBM.

He found a utility on the web and it costs $35.

Turning off Windows control of the wireless really sped things up on my machine (thanks for that). The Windows connectoid still remains, along with the AC icon though. As much as I prefer AC, it would be nice if along with the list of networks it can see, it would indicate what the signal strenght is (the way Windows does in SP2), but the ability to change from profile to profile with AC makes up for it.

AC offers a lot of nice advanced features that Windows doesn't. For instance, when you switch to a wired profile it will disable the power to your wireless card, it can automatically launch VPN software or other programs, change the default printer, map network drives, and a host of other things that can be customized per profile.

For me, all I really have it do it switch the wireless access points, so the Windows software works fine, but I'd rather use AC just because it's soo cool. I guess it's like having a Ferrari and a Chevy. The Chevy gets the job done, but wouldn't you rather drive the Ferrari?!?!

I've tried that with the previous version of AC. I tried all different kinds of scenarios, upgrading AC then installing SP2; SP2 then AC; AC,SP2,AC, whatever. I guess the next step is to try it with v3.7. Other than that, next time I format my hard drive hopefully I'll have better luck...

Thanks for the advice, though. I will give it a try wtih 3.7

At this stage, consider Registry First Aid from Rose City Software. Cheap, but not free, I gambled on this product when I have buggared up Access Connection with one of my experimental ideas. It clean up enough registry garbage that I did not have to reformat. Turned out to be a valuable and effective purchase. ... JD Hurst
