T42P: trouble removing multi-burner safely
T42P: trouble removing multi-burner safely
Hi folks-
On several occasions, When I try to safely stop my Multiburner DVD, by either using the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray item, or pushing the physical eject switch (which makes the removal tongue pop out), I get a message that the drive can't be removed because software is still accessing it. This happens even if I haven't used the drive since booting.
Is there a good way of finding out what software process is using it?
I can go through and kill task manager items one by one, but that seems pretty brute force.
Thoughts appreciated.

If you're not burning a disc or copying something from it to your HD, I would just ignore the "remove hardware" warning. It's concerned mostly with data loss, and is effectively useless for most peripherals (for most storage drives, people know to look at the disk access light to know when it's safe to remove something).

Hi Kenn-
Thanks for the reply. I forgot to include a major symptom:
After I go ahead and remove the drive anyway, the system fails to recognize the next device put into the bay (generally a HD in second HDD adaptor). I have to reboot to be able to access the device. Actually I've not tried just logging off, or suspending instead of rebooting so maybe I'm jumping the gun a little.
Anyway, whatever this is screws up the hot swappability. My current culprits in mind might be gearsec.exe and Ghost. I'll have to try them first.

Hi Marc,
Sorry, I'm out of my element on this one, but are you sure a hard drive installed in the ultrabay slim tray is hot-swappable? My initial guess would be that it is not, but I don't have one so I can't say :/
Gearsec is a cd-r driver used by programs such as itunes, I've end-processed it quite often without detrimental effect (except for itunes burning problems, of course

Hi Kenn-
Thanks again for followup. Hard drives in the ultraslim bay are definitely hot swappable. I do it all the time; it's one of my favorite backup strategies. Before a trip, I'll Dump compressed ghost images of my hard drive partitions onto a second HD in the ultraslim bay.
OK I've cleared gearsec.exe; that's not the culprit.
Anybody know a good way to ferret this out?

I had the identical problem with my last T42p. I think it may have resulted from installing NERO without uninstalling IBM DLA and the Record Now software. I haven't tried installing NERO on the current machine yet, but I definitely will uninstall IBM DLA and RecordNow if I do.

FOUND IT!!
It was the BounceBack Launcher tray application. I use BounceBack to automatically back stuff up when I connect a specific external USB2 drive. This tray application apparently holds onto removable media resources and didn't like to let go.
