sgtray.exe

#1 Post by Steve007 » Thu Mar 03, 2005 6:32 pm

Why is it that when I go to shut down any ThinkPad T4x machine I randomly get the 'End Process' box with the sgtray.exe program that seems to have trouble ending :?

Is this common? I've traced the file path, C:\Program Files\VERITAS Software\Update Manager

Can I kill this update?

Run services.msc and see if it's listed as a service. If so, set it to manual. Use msconfig.exe to see if its listed in the registry key that runs programs on startup.

Or you could just google it and read all about it--there are tons of links explaining it.

Well yes, but seeing as this was a ThinkPad issue and this is a ThinkPad forum I thought I'd ask people who may have had first hand experience rather than reading about some random person randomly explaining the issue :?

My point is that really it is specifically not a Thinkpad issue at all--it just happens to be happening on your Thinkpad because of non-Thinkpad software you've installed.

But the best reason to take services questions to google is that there seem to be a number of people who have nothing else to do with their time than work out what various things like this do, how necessary they are, and how to get rid of the, and so very specific, much better informed information is available there. For your question I found several answers from specialists much better than anything you're going to get here from generalists.

According to the first google hit, sgtray.exe is the "System Guard Tray Icon" -- part of the Backup Exec package. Nothing to do with the ThinkPad.

(Unless IBM is now selling Backup Exec with ThinkPads now. They do pre-load Norton AV which I think very little of, so nothing would surprise me).

This is an issue relating to the preloaded application "RecordNow".
Removing "IBM RecordNow Update Manager" or "Sonic Update Manager" (depending on version) from Add/Remove Programs should resolve it. Removing this does not affect the functionality of RecordNow at all.

It's preinstalled thus a ThinkPad issue as it's part of the software image preloaded on the machines.

My appologies. I was under the impression that RecordNow was made by Sonic and not Veritas (actually I *know* that it was a Sonic product as recently as two months ago, but that must have changed). I saw "VERITAS Software" in the path referenced in the original post and since they *are* the authors of Backup Exec, the google hit seemed accurate.

**Update** I just checked and Sonic bought RecordNow from Veritas in early 2003. Could this be an old installation? If so, perhaps upgrading to the Sonic version will fix the problem (or just delete the updater from Add/Remove programs).
