T43 hangs a bit on the splash screen
T43 hangs a bit on the splash screen
I just picked up a late model Intel graphics T43 in very good condition.
It has a 40GB Fujitsu hard drive that prompts the 2010 "message". No problem.
When I first turn on the laptop, I always hibernate it, the IBM splash screen stays on for maybe 45 sec. or so. Can I change this?? There is no hard drive activity that I can see. Usually on other laptops this is just a quick flash screen and goes to the password prompt........
The T43 is fast with everything else.
What can I do about this if anything..Am I forgetting something??
Thanks,
Ron

We had a similar issue with our T43. Is the machine attempting to connect to a wireless network?

Temporarily remove the password(s) and change the boot sequence in the BIOS to 1) HD, 2) CD etc.
If it now works properly, put them back one at a time.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed. Go into BIOS, then press F9 for default values, and press F10 to save that.
Does it work better now?

Re: T43 hangs a bit on the splash screen
Remove the wireless card.
Remove the hard drive.
Test the machine with a known good stick of RAM alternating between the slots.
If none of that works, the Southbridge chip is likely on its way out.
Good luck.

Re: T43 hangs a bit on the splash screen
I'm not sure I have a proper answer - Nick (poshgeordie) could most likely help you with the "why" bit...
I have seen several machines of this generation that suffered ocassional hanging on BIOS screen which became permanent after a while. Most of them would continue to boot when pressure was applied on the Southbridge chip...

Re: T43 hangs a bit on the splash screen
ok, thanks George..I'll check it out.........
EDIT: actual hang time at boot is really only 15-20sec, not 30-45sec. It seems like 5 minutes when you want to quickly check something though......

Re: T43 hangs a bit on the splash screen
Does the T43 support booting from USB harddrives? If something is connected to one of the USB ports it might hang there, waiting for response. At least this was my experience with a T60p in a dock, where the external harddrive was connected, but turned off.
