Memory Amount V Bus Speeds

#1 Post by le_porquer » Fri Jun 11, 2010 9:07 am

Hi,

I've been given a 512MB stick of PC2100 for free.

I currently have a 512MB & 256MB stick of PC2700, and I want to replace the 256MB PC2700 with the 512MB PC2100 because, by my continued understanding; more MB = over bus speeds.

Anyone disagree? Is bus speed preferred over memory amount?

Many thanks :)

You will have more RAM, but all of it will run at PC2100 speed, if you do that!
You be the judge if your programs will run (much) slower than before.

You also would have an extra 256mb at 2700, outside the computer.

If there is no obligation to keep the one given to you, you could buy a single stick of 1gb 2700, and sell all of the other sticks, or maybe all of the sticks except for the 2700 256 or 512.

With your computer, I don't believe there is any benefit to matching sticks together.

Depending on your OS and programs, you may find about 1gb to be a point of quickly diminishing returns. Though some people insist that too much is never enough...
